Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I completed the ACT twice in high school, and I was able to improve my ACT English score from a 29 to a 32 in a period of just 6 months. The highest ACT English score I received was a 32 (out of 36). I am a native English speaker, and I have several undergraduate and graduate degrees that required high-level academic writing and accurate usage of English usage/mechanics and English rhetorical skills. I have an affinity for grammar, sentence structure, and proper formal writing techniques.

ACT Reading

I took the ACT twice when I was in high school, and I was able to improve my ACT Reading score from a 27 to a 31 in just 6 months. My highest ACT Reading score was a 31 (out of a possible 36). Since that time, I have completed several undergraduate and graduate degrees that have required significant critical thinking and literary analysis skills. I have completed advanced and graduate-level courses in literature, particularly Spanish and Latin American literature. In these courses, I have produced academic essays on works ranging from poetry to novels to plays to short stories.

Career Development

During my five years of academic administration and teaching experience at the University of Oklahoma and Arkansas State University, I advised students in both informal and formal capacities. I met with students and discussed schedule creation, general degree planning, the advantages of foreign language minors/majors, potential graduate studies, and career paths that could result from various degree combinations, internships, etc. I also served as a mentor and faculty liaison for the department's academic tutors at Arkansas State University, and in this role I presented workshops, hosted "feedback" sessions, and held discussions with individual students on their career aspirations and how tutoring in a foreign language could leverage their future goals.

College Counseling

As an alumna of the University of Oklahoma, I am well-versed with the workings of higher education from the perspectives of a student (undergraduate and graduate levels), an administrator (administrative positions at the Lean Institute at OU, OU Housing and Food Services, and the OU Humanities Forum), and an instructor (Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics at OU and Department of World Languages and Cultures at Arkansas State University). In total, I have more than seven years of academic administration and teaching experience at the university level. During my five years as a Spanish instructor, I advised students with regard to schedule creation (per semester and per year), general degree planning (what to take and when, prerequisites, summer course options, study abroad options, etc.), Spanish minors/majors (courses, hours needed, etc.), and potential career paths (specifically how Spanish might pair with or benefit other majors/minors, especially in science, business, education, and health).

English

I am a native speaker of English, and I hold two master's degrees, one in Public Administration and one in Spanish. For these degrees, I completed a 100+ page master's thesis as well as 85+ page final project. I am well-versed in academic research and writing, and I have tutored in subjects like grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and paper formatting. I also have over five years of university-level teaching experience and more than a decade of academic tutoring experience.

ESL/ESOL

My own foreign language experience means that I am well-versed in grammatical aspects of the English language and how to explain them in simple or comparative terms. Moreover, I can help to explain English grammar and vocabulary more effectively to ESL students because of my extensive teaching and tutoring background.

Additionally, as an undergraduate, I volunteered with OU's Center for English as a Second Language, where I took part in weekly conversation with ESL students. I have also tutored adult students in ESL, particularly with regard to conversation, accent, and slang/idiomatic expressions.

General Music

I began playing the cello in fifth grade and played regularly through high school. I was in the school orchestra (as well as its pit orchestra and chamber orchestra), Strolling Strings, and the Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra. I completed AP Music Theory during my junior year of high school and received a 3 on the AP test, which gave me credit for Music Theory for Non-Majors at OU. Additionally, I attended two summer music camps and a chamber music camp at the University of Arkansas, and I participated in Solo and Ensemble Contest (district, state), All-District, and All-State. During my undergraduate studies, I took various music courses to fulfill elective credits, including some courses typically reserved for music majors; these courses included World Music, Movie Musicals, and Music History: Post-Romantic Music to the Present.

Government & Politics

I possess a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in Non-Profit Management as well as an undergraduate minor in Political Science. I have completed the following courses:

Undergraduate:
American Federal Government
Making Public Policy
Justice, Liberty, and the Good Society
U.S. Foreign Policy toward Islamic Nations
Generational Politics
Genocide and U.S. Response
American Political Parties

Graduate:
Foundations of Non-Profit Management
Government Internship
Public Budgeting and Finance
Public Financial Management
Analysis of Political and Administrative Data
Human Resource Administration
Public Policy and Inequality
Program Evaluation
Organizations: Design, Structure, Process
Federalism and Intergovernmental Relations
Research Problems

Grammar

I hold two master's degrees and am well-versed in academic writing, proofreading, and editing. I also have over five years of university-level teaching experience and more than a decade of academic tutoring experience, with a particular emphasis in Spanish and English. I am adept at spelling, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary in both languages.

Italian

I have completed 13 hours of Italian at OU. I received A's in all coursework, and I have extensive knowledge of Spanish, which aids in my ability to tutor foreign languages.

Literature

I have a Master of Arts in Spanish with an emphasis on Hispanic literature. I have completed graduate level courses in Spanish literature, Latin American literature, and Contemporary Literary Criticism. I have also published a Spanish-language article in an international, peer-reviewed journal; this article focused on Valor, agravio y mujer, a Golden Age Spanish drama by female playwright Ana Caro.

Microsoft Word

I have been using Microsoft Word for word processing functions for almost two decades. I have successfully utilized Microsoft Word to complete a number of academic papers from middle school all the way through graduate school in a variety of subjects (English, Spanish, Italian, Political Science, History, etc.). As a result, I am very proficient in formatting (fonts, spacing, margins, page numbers, header/footer, inserting pictures, etc.). I also use Word in my own proofreading and editing jobs, primarily for its "Track Changes" function, which allows for the addition of comments, questions, and requests for clarification.

Political Science

I have a Master of Public Administration with a minor in Non-Profit Management and an undergraduate minor in Political Science from the University of Oklahoma. I have completed a variety of coursework at the undergraduate and graduate levels in both Political Science and in Public Administration. Some courses include but are not limited to American Federal Government, Generational Politics, American Political Parties, Foundations of Non-Profit Management, Public Budgeting and Finance, Human Resource Administration, Program Evaluation, Public Policy and Inequality, and Federalism and Intergovernmental Relations.

Proofreading

I have two master's degrees, one in Spanish and one in Public Administration, both of which required extensive writing and the use of various formatting styles (APA, APSA, MLA, Chicago). For completion of these degrees, I wrote a 100+ page master's thesis in Spanish as well as an 85+ page final project for my MPA. I have also published an article in Spanish in an international, peer-reviewed academic journal.

I am a thorough and detail-oriented proofreader, and I check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, clarity, content, flow, citations and works cited, vocabulary usage, and more. I utilize the "Track Changes" option in Microsoft Word so that it is apparent what changes I have made and so that I can leave comments, questions, or requests for clarification. I am available for proofreading and editing in both English and Spanish.

Reading

In addition to my years of teaching experience, I previously worked for several summers as a volunteer with the Bartlesville Literacy Council's Summer Boost reading program for elementary school children. I have also tutored elementary-aged children in reading and writing and helped them to garner skills needed for the classroom and required testing as well as a newfound appreciation and interest in reading for pleasure.

SAT Reading

I took the SAT twice in high school, and my Verbal Reasoning score jumped from a 600 (out of 800) to a 670 (out of 800) in six months. My highest Verbal Reasoning score of 670 placed me in the 92nd percentile nationally. Since then, I have completed a B.A., M.A., and M.P.A., all of which involved a great deal of reading comprehension, critical thinking, and literary analysis.

I graduated summa cum laude in May 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a minor in Political Science from the University of Oklahoma. In May 2012, I graduated with a dual master's degree from the University of Oklahoma, consisting of a Master of Arts in Spanish and a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in Non-Profit Management. More recently, I taught elementary and intermediate Spanish courses at Arkansas State University from Spring 2013 through Fall 2014. Spanish is one of the most common subjects that I tutor!

Spelling

I hold two master's degrees and am well-versed in academic writing. I also have over five years of university-level teaching experience and extensive academic tutoring experience, especially in Spanish and English. I am adept at spelling in English, Spanish, and Italian.

Study Skills

Having been both a very successful student and an educator, I understand what it takes to hone good study habits, manage time effectively, and improve skill sets. I completed my high school diploma (which included several honors courses and AP American Literature, AP British Literature, AP Music History, AP Spanish, and AP Statistics) with a 4.0 G.P.A. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a minor in Political Science, and I graduated with these degrees summa cum laude with a 4.0 G.P.A. I also have a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in Non-Profit Management (3.89 G.P.A.) and a Master of Arts in Spanish (4.0 G.P.A.). I have over five years of teaching experience at the university level and have worked with students in schedule creation, academic advising, career development, etc.
