I love finding out how the world works, and sharing that joy with other people has become one of my passions. (Yes, the same classes that currently induce stress can eventually become sources of joy with some help and effort in the right direction.) My students' ages and abilities range from 7 years old and behind in first grade math, to 21 and taking upper-division college physics, to 60 and taking a professional development course as an employee in the oil & gas industry.
Most of my teaching experience is in physics. I have taught an algebra-based high school Physics class for Sooner Upward Bound, both semesters of General Physics Laboratory at the University of Oklahoma, and trigonometry-based physics to upper division students and graduates who are preparing for the Medical College Admission Test.
OU freshman physics student evaluation excerpts:
“He always went out of his way to make sure we did well.”
“… engaging. He taught the concepts very well…”
“He is very helpful during the lab. He is approachable. He is very patient."
“… available outside class … he was very prompt with returning e-mails.”
“Scott really cares about helping his students and overall is a great instructor.”
MCAT student comments:
"One of the best instructor in physics I had. The example and explanations made me understand more than I expected. Really full of energy"
"He is a great physics teacher. The best I've ever had and he calls on people to engage the students in the lecture which is good. He really makes an effort to teach in a way everyone can understand"
Any good tutor will tailor his or her approach toward the individual student and assignment in question. That said, we all have our own style. My style is to focus on the concepts and minimize the need for memorization. Physics really does make beautiful sense, but too often, we can't see the beauty in an equation or theorem because our fundamentals aren't where they need to be. So, when a class is overwhelming or you feel completely lost, the fundamental skills are one of the first things I check. This also means that I discourage you from taking extensive notes in class and in our sessions. Flashcards may be a major part of biology, foreign language and social studies, but with math and physics, almost everyone is best off understanding what's going on in "real time." I love finding out how the world works, and sharing that joy with other people has become one of my passions. I don't charge extra for group tutoring, so you can split the cost with a friend!
My son commented to me that Scott explained very well the foundational physics concepts that he had missed in class. He is looking forward to working with Scott again as the class progresses.
This was the 3rd session my son has had with Scott. I was able to stay for part of it and am very impressed by how personalized Scott makes his instruction. My son is definitely benefiting greatly from his sessions with Scott. I appreciate that he's so willing to accommodate our schedule to meet my son's needs.
I went over my calculus 2 & 3 homework, and learned a lot from the different ways that he taught the material. Scott was able to understand where I was struggling and focused his attention on making sure that I understood it fully before moving on.
Makes sure each subject is covered for upcoming ACT. Spends time explaining and giving examples to help the student prepare for the ACT.
So far Scott is just what we need. Virgil was able to work on math skills that he has either forgotten or never did learn in school for some reason. Simple equations as well as basic math facts were covered as warm ups to gain a foundation for more abstract thinking.
After the first meeting with Scott, we felt he would be a great tutor for our son. Scott is very approachable and accommodating to the individual needs of the student and provides many years and levels of expertise. He was able to target the weak areas and help our son understand new, unfamiliar math concepts in order to excel on future exams. In addition to this, Scott communicated with us (the parents) his thoughts regarding the tutoring session and gave us recommendations. Having such a tailored experience is ideal and we look forward to more sessions with him.
Scott was great, he knows what a student needs and gets on it right away, everybody that needs help in their MCAT needs Scott
Within the time frame I had to study for the GRE, Scott was always very flexible with meeting up, and although we only met for two sessions, he improved my mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills greatly. He was very personable and patient with me, especially since I have not had math in quite some time and would make several silly mistakes. Scott also helped me look at the practice problems we went through in several different ways and helped me develop techniques on how to approach certain problems and provided insight on test-taking skills. He is very intelligent and bright and definitely knows what he's talking about!
Noorain improved her GRE math score by 5 points with two hours of tutoring and a whole lot of studying on her own. Great job, Noorain - your effort has paid off!
After four tutoring sessions with Scott, my 17-year-old son feels much better prepared and confident about his upcoming Pre-Calc Final exam. He says that Scott helps keep him focused, explains things in a way he can understand,is easy to work with, and that he finds the sessions very productive. I appreciate the session reviews that Scott emails to me following each session to keep me informed about what was accomplished and how careful he is to use the billed time appropriately.
My son had nothing but good things to say about Scott! My son says he is a genius and really appreciates him sharing his knowledge with him. Under his care he believes he can start passing his Chemistry tests!
Scott was a great tutor. He was very patient. He tries to find a way to make sure you are understanding the materials that you needed to learn. He's worth hiring as a tutor!
Scott is an amazing tutor. He is super intelligent and eager to help. He came prepared to every session I had scheduled with him. He really takes the time to ensure you understand the material. He doesn't just do your homework for you. He explains things so well. If you are not understanding the material he gets creative and tries different approaches to explain things. I felt very well prepared for my exams after meeting with him. My grades improved a ton. I highly recommend Scott. He is very professional and good at what he does.
The few hours spent with my son completely changed his understanding of algebra. He has not had any problems again.
Scott was a huge help. I found him to be very professional, knowledgeable, & patient. I felt comfortable working with this tutor and plan to use him in the future.
Andrea was in a brutal Physics 2 class, and still made an A. Way to go, Andrea!
Meeting Scott for the first time I knew he knew what he was talking about. He was very helpful and was able to always find time to meet with me. What I liked most is he figured out how I learned and would teach me that way. Scott was able to understand my thought process and help me grasp the material better. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
We covered A LOT of information in the tutoring session. I already feel more confident and less apprehensive about the future of this class, Can't wait for our next session! I'll be a pro by the time we finish this semester. Thanks, Scott!!!
I hired Scott at the beginning of November to help my 10th grade daughter in Chemistry and Algebra 2. Scott immediately made a difference. Scott obviously has a passion for teaching and is constantly teaching the entire time he is with my daughter. He is like a teacher on teaching steroids. My daughter has been making A's on her homework since Scott started working with her. She went from recently stating that she does not understand anything about Algebra II to making an 80 on her last quiz.
I would like to state that Scott's ethics and integrity is impeccable. I have never been billed one minute over the teaching time that he has provided. Actually it has been quite the opposite. I have noticed that he errs on the side of caution and appears to round down by my calculations. I completely trust Scott and would highly recommend him if you are looking for a tutor.
Scott and I agreed to 1 hour of tutor for my daughter. I did not authorize anytime over 1 hour, my daughter didn't know any different, but Scott, as an adult and the tutor should know the different between 1 hour and almost 2 hours, this is an abuse of time and above what we agreed upon. I therefore have to terminate this tutor service due to deceitful and untrustworthy behavior.
Many students and parents ask me to limit the length of lessons, to keep costs down. I always honor these requests. Even after our lesson is over, I've had students call me to say "I didn't understand how billing works," and we always find a solution.
Chi never asked me to limit the lesson to an hour. Her daughter had already received a free hour of tutoring when we rescheduled our second lesson. Chi said "My daughter is busy and will only be free for one hour," indicating that the time limit was purely a scheduling issue. She never mentioned "I can only afford one hour." Chi's daughter showed up over thirty minutes early, implying that her schedule cleared up.
If Chi had ever said "I can only afford one hour per week" -- even if she had said this after the lesson was over -- I would have made sure she was satisfied with how she got billed.
Scott was very good at tutoring, He was thorough, and patient, and explained things on a level that was educated but basic enough to understand. I will definitely use him again!
Scott was very patient with me during our session. It had been several years since I had done any kind of math and he did a great job of refreshing my memory and reteaching me old concepts. After only one session I already feel more confident than I did before. I'm looking forward to the next session.
Scott is a thorough professional. The quality of his work is excellent. I enjoyed working with him and would give him my business again if I needed help with my studies.
Scott is great tutor! I would highly recommend him to any student who needs help with Math, Chemistry, and Physics. He makes sure you fully understand the problem before you go about solving it, which helps with understanding the material. When you are stuck on a problem, Scott does not simply provide you with an answer, he pushes you to solve the problem on your own, which makes you the student more confident on exams.
If it weren't for Scott I would not have passed my math class. Thank you so much, I can now graduate.
Scott is very sharp and attentive. He is articulate and helps break things down. Just one 2-hour session with Scott helped me comprehend most of what I was behind on.
We are very thankful to Scott for helping with Physic II. Scott worked with my daughter with her College Pysics II class this past semester. With his help she made a high A in the class.
Scott is an excellent precalculus tutor. In just an hour and a half our son learned a great deal. Scott gave our son the knowledge and confidence that he needed. We highly recommend Scott for any tutorial position. He is both mannerly and brilliant!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
