Bio

I love to see students "Get it!" when I tutor. I am patient, tenacious and I don't give up until a student understands! One of my areas of expertise is creating visual materials for students who are visual learners. I will draw, use manipulatives and anything else it takes to explain a concept.
I worked for 14 years as an interpreter/tutor for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and tutor to hearing students as well. (from 2002-2016) Twelve years of my experience has been working with...

I worked for 14 years as an interpreter/tutor for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and tutor to hearing students as well. (from 2002-2016) Twelve years of my experience has been working with elementary aged and middle school aged students, though I have worked with students from pre-school to high school ages as well. (However; middle school and high school math is not my expertise!) I can also tutor high school and college students who are taking American Sign Language (ASL) as their foreign language credit.
Some of the most enjoyable parts of my past experience have been working as a language role model with Deaf students to increase their ASL vocabulary so that they can communicate with their families, teachers and peers. I especially love to tutor families to increase their ability to communicate with their Deaf child.
I have experience with students with special needs which include: Deafness and Autism, Deafness and Emotional Disability, Deafness and Obstinate Defiance Disorder, Deafness and CHARGE syndrome, Deaf and Hearing students with low cognitive ability, Hearing students with Autism and Hearing students with Emotional Disability.
I am generally available to tutor from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. M-F. My fee is $40 an hour.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Bachelors in Applied Arts and Sciences from Texas State University and worked as an interpreter for a Regional Day School Program for the Deaf in Texas for 14 years and much of that time was in the elementary school setting. My job description as an interpreter included being a teacher's aid and a tutor. I interpreted all subjects and so I am very familiar working with students at this age. Because I was in the general educational classrooms I not only tutored the Deaf students, I also tutored the hearing students who needed help.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have a Bachelors in Applies Arts and Sciences from Texas State University. I worked extensively with 2 students who were Deaf and Autistic. (one for 5 years and the other for 3) I attended workshops that taught us how to write social stories. I used the Boardmaker program to make schedules for their academic day. I provided social stories that pertained to their world, their frustrations, feelings, etc. I created countless visuals for them to use until they were able to internalize what was being taught.
Hard of Hearing

Hard of Hearing

I am a certified Sign Language interpreter and have interpreted for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students of all ages for the last 14 years. As part of my job description, I was a tutor to these same students. For the last 3 years, I had to take on the role of teaching to a middle school aged Deaf student due to lack of Deaf Education teachers for most of his academic day. I also have experience with Deaf and H of H students that had other disabilities such as: Low cognitive Ability, Blindness, Charge syndrome, Autism, Obstinate Defiance Disorder and Emotional Disability. I also am able to tutor High School and College students who need help learning American Sign Language.
