About Valerie

I love learning and helping others learn. It is an honor to help people when they are especially vulnerable and empower them to accomplish their goals. I began tutoring nine years ago and have not stopped since. In addition to private tutoring, I have tutored though college programs and professional tutoring services. I have also been an instructor for a home school group and after school programs. My favorite subjects are English, Literature, Writing, Reading, Social Studies, Speech Prep, and Study Skills. I also love helping students beat the ACT Test. Beyond having years of ACT tutoring experience, I also have an Masters degree in Business and two Bachelors degrees in fields (History and Political Science) that heavily emphasized reading, writing, analysis, and critical thinking.

Tutoring Philosophy – Tutoring well requires really listening to people and hearing even what they are not saying. The tutor must study the student and tailor a plan. It is the most critical part of tutoring. Without knowing your student and their needs, goals, strengths and weaknesses, you can tutor for months without results. Tutoring requires building great trust, being firm and kind, always maintaining control of the situation, and being professional no matter what happens.

I grew up in the wonderful communities of Guthrie and Edmond, Oklahoma, graduating high school at Oklahoma Christian Schools (OCS). Their academic rigor and my need to obtain college scholarships pushed me to study the ACT until I achieved my goal of over a 30 (I made a 31). I suffered through numerous ACT classes and books, painstakingly improving my score. It was only later, as a standardized test tutor, that I realized I had approached the ACT the wrong way. Foolishly thinking I could learn all the material that the ACT may or may not cover, I had studied away. My experience and how much I disliked some ACT subjects inspires me to make studying for the ACT as quick and painless as possible while still achieving the desired results. Whether your goal is a 21 or 35, I tutor tailored to your needs, strengths, and weaknesses.

Math is my least favorite subject, which makes me an excellent ACT Math tutor for most students. I help them learn to succeed on the ACT Test and in the Math section with as little time and effort as possible. I tutor towards succeeding on the test. You do not have to know very much science to beat the ACT test. This section, more than any other is about test taking skills. I have taught numerous students how to succeed and seen more scores rise in this section that any other. I worked professionally as an ACT Tutor at College Nannies and Tutors. While attending college, I was the standardized test prep tutor for a college program. I have worked with students trying to achieve a variety of goals.

Information you probably don't need to know – I enjoy bird and squirrel watching, playing board games (especially when I change the rules), puzzles, reading historical biographies (pre industrial revolution) and researching a variety of topics from early modern Europe and the ancient world. My favorite movie is Kingdom of Heaven. I enjoy slow days in the country and time on the family farm (Favorite animal is a sheep). They are kind, trusting, patient, loving, and strong. Unless of course they are trained otherwise, yikes! I love to see and appreciate the world. I visited 47 states, 4 Canadian provinces, Mexico, Jamaica, Malta, Greece, Israel, Turkey, England, Scotland, Ireland and Italy twice. My favorite place on earth that I visited is a three way tie between the library at Ephesus, The Gallery of Maps in the Vatican, and St. Mark's Square in Venice. Pompeii earns the distinction of being the place most fun and dynamic to talk about. It may have taken four days, but I am quite proud that I made it through every exhibit in the British Museum.
