About Tegan

Although I've officially graduated from college and have a summa cum laude degree hanging in my room to prove it, I'm never going to be finished learning. I'm no longer in a formal learning environment with dry erase boards and desks, but I'm constantly learning new skills. Each internship or job teaches me new subject matter, and I can't help but seek out knowledge on my own. I practice my Spanish skills at work or through online games and courses. It's this passion for learning and improving that helps me coach and teach kids to reach their full potential.

I've been teaching and coaching in a variety of ways for the past five years. I spent a summer teaching children photojournalism and videography in camp cabins and earned the title of "Teacher of the Week." I've edited friends' and coworkers' essays since college and helped them all achieve at least a B on their assignments. I've also coached a staff of writers to improve their writing and interviewing techniques as a yearbook editor. Our yearbooks and writers have gone on to receive awards for our hard work. I look forward to helping you or your child learn new skills and have fun along the way.

As a former yearbook editor, I've logged many hours with my red pen, marking grammar errors and giving constructive content suggestions. My own writing skills feed into my ability to help students redraft essays into stronger versions. While earning my journalism bachelor's degree, I had to rework essays, articles and stories to reach my full potential. By locking away the writing tips I learned in college, I earned a first place Gold Circle writing award on one of my yearbook feature articles. I'll help your child through the brainstorming, outlining, writing, and redrafting processes by coaching them through short exercises and their assigned schoolwork.

As a journalism student with several photography classes under my belt, I can help walk you or your child through the process of controlling your camera, setting up the perfect shots, and editing photos afterward. I combine verbal explanations with hands-on photography practice to help get proper techniques across. I'll also provide photography resources to help you decide which gear is right for you.

I prefer to meet either at your home or in public locations like libraries and quiet coffee shops for English tutoring and public parks for photography practice. I can't wait to help your child improve their writing, photography, and English skills to achieve visible results. Please get in touch to set up some tutoring time!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Photography

I took photography courses outside of school when I was in high school. I then went on to take (and earn As in) photojournalism and film photography classes in college. I also taught photojournalism at a summer camp my sophomore year in college. I earned the camp's "Teacher of the Week" title after a counselor sat in on one of my photography classes. I have also had my photographs published in my college yearbook and in a local magazine.
