About Angela

Hi!

My name is Angee and I am excited about helping students uncover their love for learning.

Education:

I attend Liberty University. I will have my degree in Educational Psychology at the beginning of August 2016.I will also be taking concurrent graduate classes in School Psychology this January. I have taken many classes which allow me to use educational theories in my tutoring and these have made retention of concepts with my students easier . It is my firm belief that when you know how the brain learns, the student will learn.

Work experience:

I started tutoring in 2009 when I tutored students at my college who were at risk for academic probation. In 2011, I spent a year tutoring a child I was a nanny for so he could enter kindergarten on time. In 2012, I started tutoring professionally for an online tutoring company which led to my face to face tutoring with WyzAnt in 2013. I currently work from home as an independent contractor for an online tutoring company and in my spare time, I like working on making resources for homeschoolers.

I have extensive experience with special needs. This includes being a nanny, tutor and home health aid. I also have experience with IEP's. I very much enjoy these children and am eager to work hard for them. They are often labeled, but I believe they just have a different way of looking at the world.

Teaching Style:

I use many techniques to teach. I first teach according to learning style. This has been EXTREMELY beneficial in my experience and I have seen great results. I also use many aspects of the Cognitive learning theory which states that children learn best when they are motivated to learn. By doing this, children don't just memorize facts. Learning becomes an experience.

I am available most evenings and even during the day. Feel free to contact me. I would love to discuss things further.

I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve your educational goals!

I also want to add that I would never want a child to suffer educationally because they could not afford a rate. Please feel free to message me about the hourly rate. I am more the willing to negotiate a rate based on circumstances that is mutually acceptable for both of us.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a developmental psychology student at Liberty University. At the college I tutored at, I tutored to special needs kids and I nanny special needs children. I have a lot of experience designing curriculum that fits their learning style. With ADHD it is about getting a lot done in a short period of time. I have learned that if I allow my students breaks, they perform better. Also it is about recognizing their frustrations and helping them to conquer them.

Aspergers

I am a developmental psychology student at Liberty University. At the college I tutored at, I tutored to special needs kids and I nanny special needs children. I have a lot of experience designing curriculum that fits their learning style. I was a nanny for a boy who had Aspergers. It was my job to get him up to the level he could enter kindergarten. It involved a lot of repetition and positive reinforcement. I also would minimize distractions that were hard on his senses such as loud noises, certain textures and certain amounts of light. I would also allow a space for him to sit and calm down when he was upset and striking out.

Autism

I am a developmental psychology student at Liberty University. At the college I tutored at, I tutored to special needs kids and I nanny special needs children. I have a lot of experience designing curriculum that fits their learning style.

I deal with Autism in the same way I deal with Aspergers. It's about patience, repetition and verbal communication enhancement. My students, just like my Asperger students would often get frustrated and strike out so I would give them a place to calm down and often time if they had something that comforted them such as a favorite stuff animal, I would make sure they had that as well. Tutoring Autism students is a fine balance between learning and not overloading their senses so I take that into consideration when I tutor them. Often time they strike out not because they are undisciplined but because they are overwhelmed.

Bible Studies

I go to a Christian College. I have an extensive comprehension of theology because of the classes I had to take. This includes Old Testament Class, New Testament classes and Life of Christ Classes

Career Development

I am currently employed with a tutoring company as a career services tutor. I routinely look at resumes and cover letters. I also help prep customers for job interviews and advise them of career options. I teach students about career assessment tests and how to look for jobs based on the skills they are good at. I also work through the best options for them as the progress up the career ladder

Common Core

All of my students are currently in public school. Our state is a Common Core state so I often have to research and keep on track of the latest teaching methods for CC. My state is also a Common Core testing state so I have to know the testing booklets in extensive detail. I more importantly have to show these students how to solve math problems and read from these standards. It is something that is always evolving for me.

Composition (Music)

I was a music major before I switched to psychology. I had to take three semesters of music theory where I learned the rules of music. I learned the cords and fundamentals and how to properly arrange them in music. Very often our final exam would be a composition.

Criminal Justice

I took elective criminal justice classes as part of my degree. I did this so I could understand the system as I will work with children through the system. I can understand the branches of government. I understand corrections and the laws that are associated with them such as due process and several other concepts.

Drums

I play drums in my free time. I have been doing this since I was ten and it was even my major before I switched to psychology. I have won awards and played in bands and recitals

General Music

I spent the first two years of college as a music major. This allowed me to take several music classes. This included music theory, history, and music appreciation. I started tutoring in 2009 when I tutored students at my college who were at risk for academic probation.

IELTS

I am an ESL teacher on several sites.

I have tutored these students for almost a year. I have done IELTS test prep along with TOEFL. They are very similar. My students give five star ratings.

Music History

I have taken these classes as part of my education experience. When I teach this class, we studied about the various eras of music such as the baroque period. We also studied the biography of the composers and their contribution to the music.

Nutrition

I took Nutrition as a freshman in college and got an A. I learned about the food groups, the food pyramid, exercise, etc. I also learned about nutrition as it pertained to people with food allergies and various health problems.

Psychology

I am currently getting my psychology degree. I understand basic psychology and how we operate and even more complex psychological concepts such as developmental psychology. I have taken basic psychology, child and adolescent psychology and even personality psychology.

Public Speaking

I took speech/public speaking a year ago. I can teach this class because I understand communication. I understand that there are not only forms of verbal communication but nonverbal forms as well. I can teach the effective way of speaking that keeps the audience's attention. I also use public speaking in the fact that I teach in an online community. This involves using the aspects of speech to keep my readers engaged.

Religion

I am a last year student at a Christian university. Because of this, I have religion requirements as part of my degree. I have studied Old Testament, New Testament, Apologetics, etc. These are just a few examples.

Sewing

I am a seamstress. I learned from my mother. We both worked in a fabric store, where we learned new tricks and took classes to help our customers.

Social Studies

I am a certified social studies tutor for another online tutoring company. Because of this, I am widely versed in all aspects of social studies such as social studies for elementary students, middle school, and high school students. We touch on various subjects such as civics, geography, politics, etc. I am also required to renew my knowledge for that site every year and am sent training material so my knowledge is current.

Sociology

I have taken sociology classes as it relates to my degree. I know how sociology operates with psychology, in different cultures and within the family unit.

Special Needs

I am a developmental psychology student at Liberty University. At the college I tutored at, I tutored to special needs kids and I nanny special needs children. I have a lot of experience designing curriculum that fits their learning style.

I have worked with all sorts of special needs such as ADHD/ODD/ASPERGERS, etc. I work with them on a case by case basis and tailor my teaching around their needs. One example was I tutored a student with a visual impairment. I would often type her notes for class in large font so she could read them and we would give her textbooks to her on CD.

Study Skills

I am a student with a learning disability. I worked very hard in school with a remedial counselor who taught me effective study skills. Time management is crucial to study skills. How you block out your time will greatly increase your grades. Also there are several strategies that you can use to help with comprehension such as flash cards, mnemonics, and highlighting information.
