About Jeanne

The best part of teaching is one-on-one contact with students. As a career professor, I have taught classes of just a few students, as well as those requiring stadium seating-- but the best experiences of all are those encounters with students who need extra clarification and support. My philosophy of tutoring is that most students need encouragement and confidence along with course-specific information to make them successful in their academic endeavors.

The best part of tutoring? Seeing a student excel, seeing a grade improve, and seeing a student be happy with his or her progress. I believe that good tutoring is rooted in a solid relationship between the student and the tutor. That said, I believe in realistic results-- a student failing a course will probably not be making A's after the first tutoring session. Success is long-term dedication, and I will be with each student step-by-step until goals are met.

My best areas are English composition, literature, history, cultural anthropology, and verbal areas of business: management, marketing, leadership, business communications, speech (and getting over the fear of giving one), and strategic management. I am also skilled in what I call "test management," which means assisting students get over test anxiety. This is not a comprehensive list by any means, so contact me and we'll see what I can do to help.

I prefer to meet in public places, such as libraries, but this, too, is negotiable. I also prefer to have an introductory meeting (free of charge) to answer any questions and to assess what a student needs-- each student will have an individualized tutoring plan based on needs and goals. After each meeting, I will assign "homework," not just to be assigning it, but to assist students reach goals. For example, if a student is having an issue with a particular book for a literature class, I might ask that student to do some fundamental research on the author for our next meeting. Often understanding the author is the key to understanding the book.

Are you ready to make the grade? If so, contact me and we can meet to discuss your future!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have 25 years of college teaching experience in business--management, marketing, general business, public speaking, communications, English composition, and areas of history and anthropology.
