Bio

Child development and learning theories are at the core of why I decided to pursue a degree in Early Childhood Education. I graduated from YSU in 2014 and have spent the past two years starting my teaching career. I have experience teaching in daycare setting, a private school and a Montessori school. What I love about tutoring is the one-on-one aspect. Teaching one-on-one is the ideal situation for both tutor and student!

In my lessons, I try to be as hands-on as possible, incorporating sensory learning into each session. I believe the senses are key to success in school and, unfortunately, are often overlooked. I will start our tutoring journey getting to know YOU and HOW you learn. I will provide a series of FUN tests that will guide me in better teaching you. We will start each session with review and a goal for the day. FUN "homework" will be given to reinforce what you learned that day. I can accommodate all types of learners, so if you are a kinesthetic learner and struggle to sit still, I will come up with a plan to achieve our daily goals in an engaging manner!

My academic passion lies in English Language Arts (ELA), I have always been an avid reader and writer, lover of poetry and improvisation. Reading, writing, speaking and listening is the basis of all academia. I make reading and writing fun through interest-based learning strategies. My premise is simple: the more you read and write, the better reader and writer you will be!

As a recent graduate of YSU, I am able to bring the latest knowledge of the CCSS to each tutoring session. I have curriculum writing experience for common core and I referred to it on a daily basis as an elementary teacher.

I have two years of teaching elementary experience in elementary. I also have four years of daycare experience from ages 6 weeks to 12 years. I am very knowledgeable in the fields of child development and learning theory, as I have seen it in action! I absolutely love children and I am always looking for ways to connect myself to the student and the student to learning.

You can contact me from 8am-8pm each day! I am very flexible in my availability. I look forward to hearing from you!

Common Core,

Common Core

I have thoroughly studied Common Core for my student teaching TPA (Teacher Performance Assessment). I have implemented and consulted the CCSS daily in my teaching practice. I have also co-written and supervised the writing of the CCSS curriculum for an Islamic Academy in 2015.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently hold a valid State of Ohio teaching license for Pre-K-3rd grade. I am qualified to teach all elementary subjects. I have two years of teaching experience in a private charter school, a Montessori school and an online platform for teaching ESL to students in China.
Handwriting,

Handwriting

I have extensive knowledge on the role fine motor skills play in the handwriting process. With my Montessori teaching experience, I learned that the child is naturally inclined to start writing in cursive, as it lacks the rigidity of manuscript. I will implement the steps used in the Montessori method for a child to produce and appreciate beautiful handwriting. I will provide the materials needed for early writers, or students who need to refine their fine motor skills. Such implements include sandpaper letters and triangular pencils.
Phonics,

Phonics

During my time as an undergraduate, I implemented many phonics tools/tests. Including, but not limited to spelling inventories taken from Donald R. Bear's Words Their Way and the Burns and Roe IRI. During my time as a classroom teacher, I administered and assessed students with varying levels of phonics knowledge, drawing on best practices in phonics instruction for guidance.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I believe in teaching students not only what to learn, but why and how to learn. As an undergraduate, I studied Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence theory. During my time as a classroom teacher, I assessed and catered to each of my students' type of intelligence. I also taught my students how to use a textbook to their advantage, and methods for successful studying. A student armed with study skills will be successful in any content area. As a tutor, after administering Gardner's Multiple Intelligence test, I will be able to apply a student's type of intelligence to the particular methods that will allow them to get the most out of studying.
