About Kathy

I have 5 years experience as a special education and gifted education teacher in math and language arts in grades 2-12. Part of my gifted master's degree was in educational technology. I have established my own classroom computer lab and used it in inner city high school special ed and 5-6 gifted classes as well as in a 3-6 grade Special Ed in a charter school. I believe in a hands-on learning environment and that the student must enjoy learning so he/she is motivated to want to return to and master a task. Prior to accepting a full-time contract, I substituted for several years in Canfield in K-12 in every subject. I enjoyed the challenge and the variety of topics. History is a personal passion. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I taught Algebra 1 for 2 years at Wilson High School and 1 year at Legacy academy for grades 3-6.

Dyslexia

I have a degree in Special Ed. and have work as a Language Arts teacher in both High School and Elementary school. In all my assignments I had at least 2-4 students who were struggling with dyslexia. By working one on one and being patient, my students and I found ways around their disability so they could find some success.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been licensed in the state of Ohio k-12 for the last 10 years as an intervention specialist and educational technologist. I taught for 2 years in a charter school grades K-6 and for one year in 5-6 public school language arts. Prior to becoming a full time teacher when my six children where smaller, I worked as a substitute teacher in our local school district for grades K-12. I am presently tutoring my 7 year old nephew and back to substitute teaching.

Elementary Math

My previous job was teaching math to students in 5th and 6th grade in a small group setting and teaching math individually to 3-6 grade students with learning disabilities. I have been tutoring math privately in my home for one year.

General Computer

Part of my Master degree for Gifted included an add on of Educational Technology. As a grad assistant, I helped teach computer skills to adult teachers. In my last assignment at a charter school, I was the go-to person for any software problems, wireless outage, computer short cuts, or basic repair problems such as non-working printers. I have taught my students basic Microsoft PowerPoint, Photo Shop, Excel, and internet skills.

Microsoft Word

I have a masters degree in educational technology which includes most of the Microsoft Office programs. I have taught fellow students and fellow teachers how to use these programs effectively. I have used older and upgraded versions for over 10 years.

Prealgebra

I taught Algebra & pre-algebra and Language Arts to high school special education students for 2 years and did in-school tutoring for math to prepare for the Ohio Achievement Test.

Reading

Taught Language Arts to elementary and High school Special Ed and Gifted Students. Many students began 3-4 grade levels below current grade level. All students raised at least 2 grade levels. All students past Ohio Achievement Test in Language Art at last assignment with six students English was their second language.

Social Studies

I have been teaching Social Studies, which is the elementary version of American and World History for 10 years. I have taught it in public school as a substitute teacher and as a private tutor. I have also taught both classes for middle school students as a tutor. I have been licensed in the state of Ohio k-12 for the last 10 years.

Special Needs

I am an intervention specialist with a license in Ohio. My experience includes teaching inner city special needs students in high school grades 9-12 specializing in math and language arts. After teaching special needs students during school hours, I tutor students individually for intensive review preparing for state annual proficiency tests. Following my high school experience, I worked for a number of years with elementary special needs students again in math, science and language arts. These students ranged from grade 2-6.
