My life-long passion for teaching reading is still strong. After teaching for many years I searched for additional training to meet the needs of those children who really struggle with reading and spelling even though they are bright. After a year of intense training, I became certified in Orton-Gillingham which is research based instruction for these children. I have been working at a center and tutoring in my home for over five years. My families say it is life-changing instruction. My students quickly learn that they are not "stupid". They realize they can learn with the appropriate instruction.
I am glad to answer any questions you may have. I work to support my families by being as flexible as my schedule allows.
When looking for a tutor for your child, please make sure the tutor has more than the typical teacher training. Even a teacher with a reading endorsement has not received the appropriate training. More of the same type of instruction for your child is not what your child needs. I have a masters in Education but my Orton-Gillingham training has allowed me to meet the needs of many more struggling readers. My life-long passion for teaching reading is still strong. Kim has been a wonderful tutor for my son over the last few weeks. My son enjoys his time with her and is showing great progress in his reading skills! Thanks for all your help Kim!
Miss Kim is making a huge difference in my 5th grade son's life. My son has been diagnosed as dyslexic, and we only caught it now. Her background in education and training and experiences that have lead her to be an Orton Gillingham tutor make her more effective than we could have hoped for. I was a teacher and a principal for many years, and I have never met anyone as competent, genuine and caring as Miss Kim has been. She has built a positive relationship with my son, and keeps him on track during his lessons. His confidence is building, and he is on the path to having successful strategies that will (and have already) made a difference in his ability to read more effectively. There is so much learning that takes place in such a positive atmosphere. We feel very blessed that we found Miss Kim.
My son is reading with more confidence every day, looks forward to his lessons with Miss Kim, and just earned all A's on his grade card. The all A's is not so important as much as the way in which he is earning them. He is using the strategies Kim has taught him and has gone from dreading school work and feeling overwhelmed to feeling like he can tackle the challenges that are presented to him. Kim continues to educate herself so that she is able to give the most effective instruction--this last weekend she just went for further training to enhance her already exceptional understanding and implementation of the Orton Gillingham program. We are so grateful.
My son has had many tutors in the past and dreaded going and spending time with them. He looks forward to going to tutoring with Kim. She is very positive with him and he feels more confident with his spelling and reading. I highly recommend Kim for any child struggling with dyslexia. In a few short lessons, it is obvious she has made a positive impact on my child.
Kim's enthusiasm and knowledge make her an incredible tutor. She motivates each student by the energy she brings to each lesson.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
