Bio

My name is Linda D. I hold a current Ohio teaching license in music. I taught in public schools for 9 years, working with all grades from K-12. I became a stay-at-home mother in 2004 after the birth of my first child.

I began homeschooling in 2007 and have homeschooled all 3 of my children. My oldest child, whom I homeschooled through 8th grade, has just completed his freshman year of high school with straight A's. My second child is completing 8th grade at home with me currently...

I began homeschooling in 2007 and have homeschooled all 3 of my children. My oldest child, whom I homeschooled through 8th grade, has just completed his freshman year of high school with straight A's. My second child is completing 8th grade at home with me currently and will attend high school next year. My youngest is finishing 4th grade and will be homeschooled again next year. I have taught my children reading, spelling, grammar, printing and cursive handwriting, literature, composition, math through Algebra I, Spanish, history, geography, science, piano, typing, and a bit of computer coding.

Over the years, I have instructed numerous private music students in flute and piano. I have also volunteered extensively in children's ministry at my church, teaching Sunday school and leading music programs. In addition, I have 15 years of experience working for local library systems. Much of that experience has been working in youth services, helping to meet the needs of children and their parents.

Grammar

Grammar

I believe that grammar is becoming a lost art in education today. I was fortunate to have solid grammar instruction when I was in school and to have been raised by a mother who was a former English teacher and was always quick to point out grammatical errors. Grammar isn't always fun, and it is a subject that you need to study for a while before you begin to appreciate its necessity and reap its rewards. In the end though, a solid understanding of grammar can really help to lay the foundation for developing excellent written communication skills. I would be happy to share my knowledge of grammar with your student to get them started on that path!

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I'll be honest--math was not my strong subject when I was in school. I really didn't like it, but I've come to realize that's partly due to the way I was taught. I memorized a lot of steps to solve problems, but no one ever gave me the "big picture" of why we were doing these things. Since becoming a homeschooling parent, I've had to reteach myself math, and I've come to realize that the best way to really learn something is to teach it to someone else. I understand and appreciate math so much more now. So when I teach it to my children, we don't just talk about WHAT to do, but we also talk about WHY we're doing it. I have gotten a much better grasp on the big pattern that math is, and I have worked to convey that "mile-high" view to my children. As I've worked to undo my own negative experience with math, I think it's turned to a positive experience for my children. They seem to not only know how to DO math, but to really UNDERSTAND math, as evidenced by their standardized test scores in the ninetieth percentiles and my oldest son's straight A's in high school geometry this year.

Phonics,

Phonics

I taught all 3 of my children to read myself, using the Hooked on Phonics program. They all began learning at age 3 and were all fluent readers by the time they started kindergarten. I am a FIRM believer that phonics lays the foundation for success in reading, which in turn lays the foundation for success in ALL future learning!
Reading,

Reading

The ability to read and comprehend is CRITICAL to success in every other school subject. Reading is a pleasurable pastime, a path to opportunity through the acquisition of knowledge, and the means by which citizens in our democracy can make informed decisions. Reading really is the foundation for all other learning. Whether it's learning to decode words using phonics, quizzing on reading comprehension, scanning text for organization and meaning, or discussing themes in English literature, I can help your student develop this VITAL skill.
Spelling,

Spelling

Spelling is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. Both my oldest son and I are spelling bee champions. In homeschooling my children, I came to realize that spelling becomes SO much easier once children have mastered phonics. No longer will they be memorizing how to spell words; they will actually be able to "code" them using phonics rules. I also stress learning the MEANINGS of words a student is spelling. Knowing how to spell a word is useless if you don't know how to use that word.
