I am an English teacher in an elementary school who is very dedicated to being the best teacher I can. I continually study teaching methods and strategies to help all of my students succeed. I have experience in many subjects, and encourage the use of technology and other resources to help my students stay ahead of the learning curve. I have also taught in upper elementary, as well as in an Adult Education program.
I am enthusiastic, motivated, and I feel that I am successful only when I can best determine the needs of each student and give them the satisfaction of learning. I believe that all students can learn if they are taught to their strengths.
I would be happy to meet with you to discuss the possibility of helping your child explore all the options to be successful and confident in their learning! I would be willing to discuss a discount for multiple hours of tutoring.
My children were promoted a grade in the middle of the year and started a new school. I was worried starting at a new school that they wouldn't be prepared for the upcoming year. I met with Cheryl and not only was she willing to help but had a plan. She was always well prepared for every session. Cheryl would bring in work for them and suggested what I could do at home. Cheryl helped my children strive by motivating them and giving them confidence in their work. My children are better adjusted in school and had a great start to the school year. This is a credit to Cheryl's hard work and guidance. My children have since received glowing reviews academically at school. They didn't just get great/better grades but exceeded the school's, teachers' and standardized testing's expectations. I highly recommend this energetic, focus, kind and patient tutor. Teaching, tutoring and mentoring children isn't just her passion but her calling.
Cheryl is a true blessing for my son. She helped bring his grades up, helped him with organizational skills and uses different methods to help him with memorization! Shes a great tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I currently teach ESL in an elementary school. I instruct students in vocabulary, grammar, test preparation for language arts, and mathematics. In addition, I am a tutor for the Title 1 Extended Day program, where I use a variety of strategies to help under-achieving students reach proficiency in reading, writing and other facets of language arts. As the Core Curriculum standards reach implementation, I also employ cross-curricular methods to improve the student's skills in Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
I have experience in tutoring students at all levels of competence in math. I have tutored below level students and helped increase their test scores by giving them strategies to utilize for maximum success.
I have a Master's degree in teaching ESL. I am a member of NJTESOL.
I have taught all facets of English as a Second language, including learning the English alphabet. This includes teaching students whose first language is based on alternative alphabets, such as Chinese characters, and the Arabic and Gujarati alphabets. My instruction must include methods to write using the English alphabet, so I have added experience in this subject.
I teach English as a Second Language which is very heavily weighted in phonics instruction. Students who have other languages as their first language are often lacking in phonemic awareness in English. I use a variety of strategies in teaching this skill, including having the students break down words into their smallest phoneme to decode the sounds in the word, then blending them back together. I have also learned many different strategies to help students become fluent in their use of onset and rime to substitute sounds in to create new words, including rhyming words, compound words, and multi-syllable words.
I am an English teacher in an elementary school and have a vast amount of experience in test taking strategies including study skills, gathering the proper materials to assist with studying, and searching for test taking guides. I have also been successful in taking the SAT and the GRE, so I am well versed in multiple choice and essay questions. My recent experience in the classroom has also included teaching strategies for properly answering open ended questions. I have tutored and taught many students the skills necessary to pass standardized tests, and believe that I will continue to be a great asset to students with that need.
Algebra was always one of my favorite subjects in school, and as an ESL teacher, I keep myself current on the vocabulary and basic strategies used in problem solving. I am enthusiastic about Algebra, and use strategies to help students learn to the best of their ability. I have tutored students in both Algebra and Geometry recently.
I am an avid reader and continuously participate in Professional Development opportunities that help me give students the keys they need for improving their reading skills.
I am an English teacher in an elementary school and have been researching the best methods to help students succeed in their study skills. I believe that all students can reach their maximum potential if they use their innate strengths to help them understand the content being presented. One of the most important skills a student can use to assist them in studying is being able to make connections to other subjects or skills. Once the student is able to make connections on their own, it will enable them to remember and apply the information in a cohesive manner. I have been tutoring students in reading and comprehension. I have found that if they own the strategies for finding details and making comparisons, they will spend more time studying, and they will thrive in any learning environment!
