I'm a retired French and Spanish teacher with over 35 years of teaching experience. I have a Masters + a post-grad year at the University of Paris earning a certificate in linguistics and corrective phonetics for foreign teachers of French. I have also spent summers studying and traveling in France, Switzerland, Belgium and Quebec. To improve and maintain my fluency in Spanish, I have studied in Spain and Mexico. I also lived in South Florida for 10 years.
I have taught all grades and ages from 3-year-old preschool through intermediate university level. My performance evaluations by both my employers and my students have been universally positive. In addition to formal classroom teaching, I have taught touring students abroad, families being relocated to a French- or Spanish-speaking location, given private lessons, and tutored individuals having difficulty in French or Spanish courses.
My approach to teaching is flexible. My first goal is to get to know my students' learning style(s) and strengths and weaknesses. I work with the students to tailor our lessons to their needs and interests, and to prepare them for the language skill requirements they will face in the classroom, in their travels, or on the job.
In my years of teaching, I have found the most successful learning results from exposure to the language through as many different techniques and sources as possible. The more frequent the exposure, the more consistent the practice, the greater the resulting mastery of the language. To this end, I incorporate audio-visual and interactive conversational practice along with reading and writing activities to provide a solid foundation in the basic 4 language skills.
I love teaching! After more than 35 years, I find I can't imagine my life without students. Being a teacher is not just a job I do. It's a major part of who I am. The teaching/ learning process, the interactions with students, the joy of seeing the light come on when the student has truly understood: these things bring to me a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
