This past June, I graduated with a B.A. in English/Creative Writing and a Screenwriting Minor from DePaul University in Chicago. As an English major and lifelong avid reader, I have an intrinsic knack for reading comprehension. However, I am not merely a solitary reader; I enjoy sharing my insights about literature, non-fiction, essays, and articles with people around me. Furthermore, I have the capability to lead a discussion in a way that allows others to comprehend a piece of writing fully. As an individual and as a tutor, I am a fan of asking questions that lead to a well-rounded understanding of the subject of discussion. I believe this leads to better comprehension and retention for the student.
In my college coursework as a member of DePaul's Honors Program, I have had the privilege of writing in all forms--research papers, essays, fiction, poetry, magazine clips, feature-length films, and sitcom scripts. I have an intensely strong grasp on the English language and how to use it to explain or express something elusive. As a tutor, I am able to show a student how to structure sentences and organize paragraphs while explaining why it should be done that way. I also have extensive proofreading experience. Recently, I proofread two poetry books and a scholarly book written by Tony Trigilio, Director of Poetry/Creative Writing at Columbia College. Furthermore, many friends have asked me to edit papers for them. I enjoy it because I love to help out friends and learn about new subjects.
At DePaul, I was involved in tutoring middle school students on the South Side of Chicago, and I greatly enjoyed it. Furthermore, I have helped my little cousins with various writing projects (ages 11 and 14). I have been teaching swimming lessons for the past seven years as well. I have taught group lessons to students of different ages and abilities. In addition, I have conducted private lessons for many students. In particular, this experience made me realize that I have the patience and ability to truly make improvements for a student. Working one on one, I am able to explain basic physics to a nine year old in order for them to understand why I have them tweak their swimming stroke. In my experience as a swimming instructor, I have built up relationships with both my students and their parents. Oftentimes, I play games in the pool after lessons; I have been praised by parents for my thorough feedback and dedication to their children.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
