About Leanne

Yes, I am a certified teacher, and no, I did not become a teacher to have summers off! As my friends and fellow teachers will tell you teaching is a vocation! I love every minute of teaching, even when it is tough. I have been employed with The ESC of Lake Erie West for 16 years. I am certified and highly qualified for K-12 Math, Science, Social Studies and English.

My two, possible three, real loves are Math, Reading and technology. For the past 4 years I have been teaching Middle School, and have a good handle on all the new Common Core expectations. I am able to quickly assess what kids can and can't do, and get them back on track. This year my group of students have made major improvement in their math and reading comprehension, which is due to very strategic interventions and effort. Teaching is a partnership, and kids have to trust and know that the teacher is interested in helping them!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

I am a certified special education teacher, specializing in students with moderate to intensive needs. Additionally, I have worked at a separate facility for 16 years, and have worked with students all across the spectrum. I continue to train and learn new things. I utilize professional development authorized by my employer as well as OCALI (the leader in autism), as well as the State Support Team - I am in the process of becoming certified as a SIM (Strategic Instructional Method) Instructor.

Autism

Certified special education teacher. In addition, I have gone through extensive training with a career coach learning SODA, taking OCALI courses, and implementation of social stories. Furthermore, I have worked successfully with students on the spectrum for more than 5 years and understand what works and what doesn't. I am a strong believer in visual schedules, choice and flexibility.

Common Core

I have fully embraced the New Common Core. My 5th and 7th grade students made it through the first round of testing. I do not have the results yet, however, I know that I had them prepared. The testing is much more rigorous in the area of being able to write and explain your answer vs. traditional bubble answers. I understand the publics frustration, and as an educator I do not "teach to the test". I have looked and taken all the tests for my grade level and then worked on incorporating strategies from the test into my daily teaching practices. From past OGT and OAA I knew my kiddos would not be familiar with 2 part questions, so we worked on that, and on extended responds, as well as reading a group of passages and seeing the common themes.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher, K-12 special education. In addition, I am highly qualified in ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies. My first 3 loves are math, reading and then technology.

Elementary Math

I have had my teaching license for over 16 years. My undergraduate course work I specialize in math. After graduation, I continue to take professional development classes, as well as being actively engage with NCTM- National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
