About Linda

There is something about the moment when a student says, "I've got it!" That is the moment I work for! As a tutor, I strive to help students make connections, develop confidence, achieve personal goals, and experience success. Using a variety of teaching methods, I help students discover their unique learning styles and use their strengths to meet challenges.

In the past, I have worked as a classroom teacher and private tutor, primarily in the elementary grades. I have also worked with second-language learners and with adults in preparation for their GED. I have worked with students who present challenging behaviors and are challenged by learning differences. In addition to a B.S. in Elementary Education, B.A. in Philosophy, and MEd. in TESOL, I am certified in Phono-Graphics and have completed an Orton-Gillingham, Multi-sensory Reading Course. This is a 30-hour Comprehensive Training course with the Institute for Multi-sensory Education. I have also taken the Lindamood-Bell Workshop, "Seeing Stars," which focuses on teaching symbol imagery, phonographic awareness, sight words, and spelling. In addition I have participated in professional development workshops on "Executive Functioning," "Working Memory," and "Strategies That Work," a course in advanced mentoring.

In 2013, I moved to this area from Maryland where I currently hold an Advanced Teaching Certificate, grades 1-6, with ancillary credits in Reading and Special Education. Recently, I became licensed in Ohio as well. In the meantime I have been "subbing" and tutoring in Lakewood and Rocky River. Last year, I tutored a 3rd grade student in math and reading. Please see her mother's comments below.

"My daughter, who is in the 3rd grade, had the privilege of working with Ms. R. Her knowledge and teaching methods made my daughter very comfortable and helped her become a much better student in Math and Reading. Ms. R. would be a great asset to your child's learning progression. I will no doubt use her services again."

I offer a free first meeting to become acquainted and set personal goals. Although I do require a 24-hour cancellation notice, I offer make-up sessions. My standard rate is $35 per hour.

"One-on-one" is my favorite way to work with students! I look forward to hearing from you and helping your child along the path to life-long learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

At the McLean School of Maryland, many of our students were diagnosed as ADD/ADHD. Some were prescribed medication by private doctors, and others were not. As a second grade co-teacher, I worked with administrators, doctors, parents, counselors, specialists, and other teachers to help our students achieve success both academically, and socially. One of the courses I took, Spotting the LD/ADHD Child--Informally and Formally, was presented by the Lab School of Baltimore. Another, Effective Behavior Management for the Young Child "At Risk" for Learning Disabilities & Attention Problems helped teachers help students with self-control, focus, opportunities for exercise as well as supportive structure.

Aspergers

When children enter school and face the challenges of day-long social interaction and academic tasks, children with Aspergers can began to show difficulty "fitting in."
Repetitive behaviors, verbal outbursts, poor eye-contact, sensitivity to touch or inappropriate touching are some of the behaviors that become apparent. One of my second grade students with Aspergers and a very high IQ, has just graduated from high school and is attending college, something his mother said, "we never believed would happen." Again, a team of dedicated teachers, administrators, specialists and family members worked together over many years to help a young boy become a young man.

Dyslexia

I am certified in Phono-Graphics and have completed the Orton-Gillingham, Multi-sensory Reading Course. This is a 30- hour Comprehensive Training with the Institute for Multi-sensory Education. I have also taken the Lindamood Bell Workshop, "Seeing Stars," which focuses on teaching symbol imagery, phonographic awareness, sight words and spelling. In addition, I have participated in professional development workshops on executive functioning, working memory, and "Strategies That Work."

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a current Advanced Professional Teaching Certificate in the state of Maryland for Elementary Education, grades 1-6 with 12 Ancillary Credits in Reading as well as credits in Special Education. I also have a current Early Childhood Teaching Certificate, grades P-3, Early Childhood Generalist, (4-5) in the state of Ohio. I have participated in professional development training, Algebra for Teachers: K-6, and a Creative Mathematics Workshop presented by Greg Tang, Making Math Meaningful for Students and Teachers.

Phonics

As a second grade teacher and as a tutor of pre-school students just learning to read, I have helped students develop phonemic awareness and phonological skill. The 30-hour Multi-sensory Reading Course with Orton-Gillingham as well as the Lindamood-Bell course, "Seeing Stars," informed strategies I have used to work with students in phonics. My Masters in TESOL, included training in linguistics--the relationship of sounds and symbols. I am also certified in Phono-Graphix.

Study Skills

The development and reinforcement of effective study skills was crucial in the second grade classes that I taught, especially because students were challenged by a variety of learning issues. Time and Time Management was one of the professional development courses I took at the Lab School of Washington. This course along with others such as Executive Functioning and Working Memory, focused on dimensions of learning that are important for all students but must be explicitly addressed and taught to students who struggle with learning issues. Using graphic organizers was one effective strategy.
