About Michele

My name is Michele, and my goal when tutoring is to encourage your child to use his/her strengths to overcome their difficulties. They need to know that they CAN learn and succeed in the real world. After all, that is what every parent wants for their child. I teach strategies that your child can use in all subject areas, such as: reading (vocabulary, decoding, and reading comprehension), basic math skills though high school Geometry, organizational skills (prioritizing, beginning and finishing, making meaningful connections),using resources available to succeed and focusing on their strengths rather than their weaknesses.

My lessons meet your student’s individual needs as determined by student and parents. I strive to have lessons designed to be challenging but based on student interest. It is important to meet your student’s personal learning style, so I incorporate using many senses to help them learn. My sessions focus on strategies the student can use in all subject areas if that meets the students goals.
I am state licensed teacher in Ohio in the areas of Early Elementary Education and Special Education (K-12). In addition, I hold a Wilson Reading System Level 1 certification, and I am a Highly Qualified Teacher in Reading/Language Arts, Math and Social Studies. I have also been honored as an Outstanding Educator of the Year for the 15-16 school year.

I have a total of 12 years teaching experience including 6 years as a Mild to Moderate Intervention Specialist and 4 years as a Home Instructor Tutor for grades 7-12th grade in my school district. Additionally, I have spent 7 summers working with students with disabilities as an Extended School Year tutor, and I have been tutoring students privately for 5 years. Previously, I was a long term substitute in ELL, Special Education, first grade, and Kindergarten for 5 years in a row.

I look forward to working with you and your child to help him/her meet their personal goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

Students with Aspergers enjoy to demonstrate what they know on their favorite subject, and they struggle with making connections with unpreferred topics. I work with my students to recognize that there are connections between all aspects of life. Students with Aspergers tend to see the world through very literal eyes and need assistance to understand the nuances of figurative language. These students need assistance to see another person's point of view, so I encourage questions and discussion about not only subject areas but social skills as well.

Autism

I am a licensed special education teacher for the state of Ohio. I have worked with children on the Autism spectrum in both small group and individualized lessons for 7 years. I use many strategies to gain and maintain the attention of my students. I believe in providing lessons utilizing many different senses to reach students with sensory disabilities and have the patience to work at the student's pace.

Dyslexia

I am Level One Certified in the Wilson Reading System. I have been utilizing multi sensory reading lessons for students with dyslexia for 5 years now and love to see the progress that I have observed. I have passed the Praxis for Reading and also have taken over 30 semester hours on the subject of learning to read, between my PreK-3 license and my Mild to Moderate Intervention Specialist license courses. Students need to be able to decode and encode the English language and providing structured practice and review improves the comprehension of students with dyslexia.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently licensed to teach both PreK through third grade as a regular classroom teacher and K-12 as a Mild to Moderate Intervention Specialist. I have been teaching students in grades K-8 since 2002. I am highly qualified in the areas of Reading and Middle School Math through Praxis exams. I have served students K-8 in many capacities over the last 10 years: daily substitute, ELL teacher, intervention specialist, and co-teaching with general education Math, Language Arts, and American History teachers, as well developing and implementing small group and individualized lesson plans.

English

I have been teaching English at the middle school and high school level for 5 years. I am currently teaching 9th and 12th grade English utilizing the Ohio Learning Standards for English Language Arts.

Phonics

I am Level One Certified in the Wilson Reading System and understand that teaching phonics/reading is crucial to not only fluency but comprehension of grade level text. I strive to make the learning of phonics not only fun, but instructional, by focusing on the academic and grade level vocabulary in our studies. Students are encouraged to read the word, talk about its structure, create a mental picture and then make a personal connection to the word.

Special Needs

I am currently licensed in the area Mild to Moderate Special Education. I have been teaching students with disabilities for the last 7 years. I was made an Educator of the Year in 2016 for my work with students with disabilities. I am Level One certified in the Wilson Reading program to meet the reading needs of Tier 3 students.
