I have tutored many students! Their ages range from 7 years to adult. Although most of my tutoring experience has been with students whose native language is English, my strong background in English and communications has also made it possible for me to help French students with their English learning needs.
I began studying French in the 4th grade. I enjoyed it so much that I continued taking the language every year for the next nine years. Then, in college, I majored in French. Prior to obtaining my B.A., I studied for 1 year in Paris, France. A few years later, I spent two years studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, France before obtaining an M.A. in French and International Policy Studies from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in Monterey, CA. I also spent one year living and working in Niger, West Africa, where French is the national language.
I have often been told that I have a natural knack for teaching. I am sure that is due, in part, to genetics (my Dad was a professor). More importantly, however, I believe that I am a good teacher simply because I love to learn and pass on what I have learned to others.
My goal is to enable each of my students to speak, read, write and comprehend the French language with confidence. My method of tutoring has made it possible for me to achieve this goal with some of my students within three to six months. I have tutored many students! Their ages range from 7 years to adult. I have been working with Carolyn for the last year, studying French. She is a wonderful teacher and a very sweet person. She has helped me progress in the language so much in the last year and I am very thankful that I chose her to be my French tutor. Her lessons and homework assignments are detailed and focused, easy to understand, but challenging in ways that are fun and actually help me learn the language.
Her pronunciation is beautiful. At every lesson she gives me detailed feedback about my pronunciation, not letting any mis-pronounced word get by! Correct pronunciation was a weak area for me and something I struggled with since first deciding to study French, but Carolyn has helped me overcome my fears and make strides.
She is professional, but also flexible when it comes to scheduling our lessons or scheduling more lessons when I feel like I need extra help. She is kind, patient and welcoming, always. I am very happy to have Carolyn has my French tutor, but also to know her as a person.
Carolyn places a strong emphasis on proper pronunciation and listening comprehension which is incredibly useful if your goal is to be conversational in French.
I have had several months of french tutoring sessions with Carolyn and have found her to be well prepared for each session. Carolyn is very thorough in her teaching and an excellent communicator. She caters each class to your individual goals and needs and encourages her students is a positive way. I look forward to additional tutoring sessions with Carolyn.
Excellent French Tutor. The only reason my son passed French, I do not know what I would have done without Carolyn. My son saw Carolyn every week, even on holidays.
Ms. Carolyn has been a wonderful tutor for my daughter! She is always coming up with new ways to learn and fun games to keep her interested in learning. I have noticed a huge improvement in my daughters grades and excitement to learn the French language since she has been working with her! We just love her!!
Carolyn is a great tutor who understands the needs of her students perfectly. The lessons are entertaining, but still demanding, which is necessary in order to get good and fast results. Carolyn provides a good learning environment and with her friendly and kind way, she helps to remove internal barriers or fear of making mistakes. I am very happy with the progress I have made within a very short time span since I started working with her.
Words cannot capture the excellence of the French education provided by Carolyn. She imparts her total command of French through patient, detailed tutelage of pronunciation, grammar and conversation. Her systematic approach also challenges the boundaries of one's knowledge, thereby solidifying marginally familiar areas, and inspiring further targeted study. Moreover, she is a wonderful human being--gracious, kind, very intelligent, and excellent with children students as well. Highest recommendation!
I feel incredibly lucky to have found Carolyn on the WyzAnt site. She has a practical, effective and fun approach to teaching French that comes from her many years of teaching experience. All of Carolyn's lessons have the perfect balance of learning and reviewing the fundamental basics of French as well as introducing new subjects. Carolyn draws from her experience of learning French herself as well as multiple other published resources to give the most well-rounded and effective lessons. She is challenging because she wants you to learn, but all the while she very kind and fun to learn from!
Carolyn has been teaching my husband and I French lessons for the last 4 months and we have been really very pleased and we strongly recommend her for other students. She has high expectations of her students and really works with them to make their dialogue and pronunciation perfect. Is a very patient and caring teacher, and highly professional. We really love working with her!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's Degree in French. I lived in Paris, France for three years, and in Francophone Africa for a year, also.
