Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I scored a 100% on the ACT English qualification test and I am a licensed Reading Specialist.

ADHD

I have a master's degree in special education. I am currently licensed by the Ohio Department of Education as a K to 12 Mild to Moderate Disabilities Intervention Specialist. While both an undergrad and a graduate student, I learned about all aspects of ADD and ADHD, including therapeutic and medical treatments and best practice teaching strategies.

American History

I am passionate about American History! Although I am not a licensed social studies teacher, I have taught American History to students in a variety of contexts.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have a Master of Arts in Education in Special Education. I am licensed by the Ohio Department of Education as an Intervention Specialist for students in grades K through 12 with mild to moderate disabilities. I have completed all trainings offered through ATS, Autism Training Solutions, while working for a private Autism school. I am trained and experienced in using ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) methods in teaching students on the Autism Spectrum. I am also trained in using PBS (Positive Behavior Supports) to provide behavior modification along with ABA therapy. I am certified through the Crisis Prevention Institute to use Non-Violent Crisis Prevention Intervention with students with Autism in high risk situations in which students may cause harm to themselves or others.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and am licensed to teach PK to 3 and Reading K to 3. I also have a master's degree in special education, and am licensed as a K to 12 Mild to Moderate Disabilities Intervention Specialist.

English

I am a licensed teacher. I scored a 100% on the English qualification test. I also love literature, reading, and writing.

Grammar

I am a "word nerd". I know when to use there, their, and there. I know the difference between affects and effects. Trained as an early reading specialist, I am a devotee of the Grammar Girl books by Mignon Fogarty.

Handwriting

I have a B.S. in Early Childhood Education and a MAE in Special Education/Intervention Specialist. I am licensed by the Ohio Department of Education to teach PK to 3 all subjects, K to 3 Reading Specialist, and K to 12 Mild to Moderate Disabilities. Teaching handwriting was an aspect of my early child education degree. I have taught many children how to write their name, upper and lower case letters, and numbers, including children and students with fine motor difficulties. I have also used modifications to assist older students with the fine motor aspect of handwriting. These include pencil grips, modified pencils, and modified paper.

Phonics

I have a B.S. in Early Childhood Education and an MAE in Special Education. I am licensed by the Ohio Department of Education to teach PK to 3 all subjects, K to 3 Reading, and K to 12 Mild to Moderate Disabilities. As a K-3 Reading Specialist, I specialize in phonics and emergent literacy. I am able to diagnose specific reading difficulties related to phonics, such as difficulty in decoding vowel and/or consonant digraphs, or not hearing a letter sound properly. I have taught many children to read using phonics methods, including children with special needs. I am able to provide reading remediation using phonics to students who are struggling in reading.

Social Studies

Part of my Early Childhood degree included taking a Social Studies teaching methods course, which required me to learn how to teach social studies correctly to children. I love teaching social studies, especially history, to all students. One of my favorite books is Lies My Teacher Told me, and when I am teaching social studies or history I am acutely aware of the lessons I learned in that book.

Special Needs

I have a masters degree in special education. I am currently licensed by the Ohio Department of Education as a K to 12 Mild to Moderate Disabilities Intervention Specialist. I first started working with the special needs population when I began babysitting for a boy with cerebral palsy when I was 17. Ever since then, Physical Disabilities, Hearing Impairments (hearing aid), Cognitive Delays, and many other special needs. I have learned that students are all different in so many ways, and that to be a great teacher I need to get to know each student as an individual. That is really my favorite part of being a teacher - getting to take the time to know each student.

Study Skills

I was a very organized student in high school and college and I can teach students a variety of ways to stay organized. I know a wide variety of study skills, including note taking, making an outline, making flashcards, keeping track of important dates, developing the right study environment, reading for information, and using acronyms to memorize important information.
