About Karen

I have a BA degree and have been a private tutor for the last 10 years with a large company, certified in their Reading and Math programs. I love working with students and seeing the light bulb come on! Reading, writing, reading comprehension, basic math and Spanish are my most requested subjects. I have worked with kids all across the learning spectrum as well as all ages. While I try to make the learning fun it is not all games; results are my goal! I look forward to working with you!
Do you feel like you just need a little MORE help? Perhaps you understand the basics but feel a little like Swiss Cheese--you just need the "holes" filled in to "get it!" A good solid foundation is key to future success! I can help you build that. We will fill in the "holes" together. Finding your strengths and maximizing them leads to confidence and better grades!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

For the past 8+ years I have tutored many children with learning differences : ADD/ADHD, mental and developmental disabilities, dyslexia, Asperger's Syndrome and Autism. I have a BA degree having completed my teaching practicum in a middle school and additionally conducted weekly classes in a state facility for those with disabilities. I have also received certification through a private Educational Tutoring company in their systematic phonics and math programs specifically geared to children with learning differences. The methods I use are varied; card or board games, flashcards, dice, blocks, touch math, book work, and much more. Variety is key to keeping the student involved and interested. In addition, I have recently spent 2 1/2 years working with the disabled for the local Developmental Disabilities Board. This has given me an even greater insight into the specific needs of those who struggle with ADD/ADHD and methods for helping them through this struggle.

Dyslexia

I have a BA degree and I have tutored students with dyslexia for the past 6+ years with a reputable firm, with great success. The same method does not work with every student. There are multiple ways to attack the issue of dyslexia. We will work together to find what helps your student succeed and gain confidence.

Homeschool

I have completed my 14th year as a home school parent; having instructed my own children all the way through in 99% of their classes. My oldest children have each received a full ride scholarship to our local college based on their grades and test performances. I received a teaching certificate in 1989 and have either been teaching my own children, private tutoring or subbing ever since.

Phonics

I have a BA with a minor in teaching. I have been private tutoring phonics for 6 years and have seen great progress in my students through a systematic phonics approach. I am a "certified reading instructor". I have taught students of all ages and skill levels across the learning spectrum.

Sewing

While I don't have any "official" qualifications to teach sewing, I do love it and have sewed for my family for years. I have made shorts, pants, dresses, ponchos, robes, costumes, and other fun crafts projects. If you want to learn the basics and have a good time doing it then give me a call!

Spanish

I spent the better part of a year living in the Dominican Republic where I learned to speak Spanish better than my 4 years of study in the classroom. I have taught Spanish to the following: kids struggling with their school class, adults who just want to learn, a group going on a missions trip, and also the reverse- Spanish kids who need to learn English to survive school here in the states.
In my previous line of work, I had many opportunities to use my Spanish skills: answering phone inquiries, assisting clients who needed a translator and negotiating on their behalf, and teaching a seminar to those needing a class we offered.
I have been fascinated with languages since I was young and have spent countless hours just enjoying learning not only Spanish but other languages as well. I am constantly intrigued at the Latin roots our languages share.

Special Needs

I have been a private tutor for 6 years with a reputable company, certified in their programs of reading/phonics and math. I have worked with typical students, those with autism, mental handicaps, Asperger's syndrome, hearing and vision impairments and ADD/ADHD. It is always a joy to see them succeed and get excited about learning. I find that hands on activities bring the learning alive for those who aren't typical "book" learners.
In addition, I have spent the last 2 years working in direct care for the local County Board of Mental Disabilities and am certified in CPR and First Aid. These experiences have further honed my teaching skills and stretched me personally to better understand the vantage point of the families who are touched by these issues. My hat's off to you for your dedication!

Study Skills

I hold a BA and have also worked with a private tutoring company for over 8 years. I have tutored in Math, Reading, Phonics, Science, Social Studies, English and Spanish. My methods are tailored to the student's learning style as much as possible. In each of these subjects, study skills are imperative. I will work with your student to apply the methods that will help them succeed.
