About James

Hello and thank you. I am an Ohio transplant, born and raised in West Virginia. I have a unique combination of education and experience with an engineering undergraduate degree and I am pursuing a masters degree in accounting. I came of age in the great era of the 80's and 90's where we had the best of both worlds - old school learning plus new technology. I have done everything from working a manufacturing setting to transportation and logistics to large energy contracts. I have negotiated multi-million dollar contracts and presented case studies in front of federal government agents.

Helping my son through his first year of algebra and teaching my girlfriend's 8-year old son beginning Excel have been very rewarding. I've always been told that I am very good at explaining complex subjects to people. In my professional career I was very good at this, for example creating a new process and training users on it. I've also helped on teams in my graduate education in understanding material to get through very complex projects.

I have an engineering degree which includes calculus, physics, engineering mechanics, and statistics. I am very good at making the complex understandable.

I have used Excel and Access for over 15 years professionally and academically. I am mostly self-taught, and I am very good at explaining these systems.

My 20-year professional has included many facets of business, everything from technical to operations to finance to marketing and sales.

My approach is to teach people to think analytically first such that it's second nature. Write down what you know and what you don't know, then brainstorm how to solve the unknowns. Most importantly show your work! Your problem-solving steps should have clarity as if they would have to defended in a court of law. Like anything else, the more you practice something the better you'll be at it. This applies to music, sports, algebra, Excel, and business problems. Thank you again, and I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

My education is first a bachelors degree in engineering. This included four semesters of calculus, two semesters of physics, and three semesters of engineering mechanics. Second am I graduate student in accounting, which includes data analysis and statistics. I have successfully helped my 14-year old son through his first algebra class, helping learn how to think through problems analytically and properly show his work.

Microsoft Access

I taught myself Access in 1998 and have been using it ever since. I also learned SQL, the underlying programming language behind Access. I have developed multiple databases for business and graduate school applications and trained users. My education is a bachelors degree in engineering and I am currently a graduate student in accounting.

Microsoft Excel

I have advanced Excel skills and have used them in my professional career for over ten years. I continue to use those skills in graduate school for accounting. I have created dozens of Excel models over the years which are still in use today, and know many of the higher level functions (VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, Index-match, IF-THEN, pivot tables).

Trombone

I have played trombone since 1982. I made West Virginia all-state band and WVU Honors band in 1988. I was in the WVU marching in jazz bands for four years, and have been in various community bands on and off since 1995.
