About Laura

Hi! My name is Laura, and yes, I am a nurse. But that’s not the whole story of me. I’m a writer first and a nurse second. Actually, I no longer practice clinically as a nurse. I’m a stay-at-home-mom (SAHM) who writes on the side.

My interest in writing began as an elementary school-age child who wrote birthday cards for family members with such “stunning” poetry as “Roses are red/ Marigolds are yellow/ Happy birthday to you / You’re such a fine fellow.” My writing drastically improved in high school, thanks to an amazing teacher who taught the art of diagramming sentences, which proved to be a useful tool for learning how parts of sentences work together. (I still enjoy diagramming sentences to this day. I know; I’m a grammar geek.) The writing skills that I learned in high school were further honed in college where I earned a B.A. in History with a minor in English and a Writing Certificate from the University of Dayton. This degree combination gave me much practice in reading, in research, and in writing. After college, I attended New York University’s Summer Publishing Institute, and thereafter, I worked as an Editorial Assistant for a medical publisher where I gained an interest in the medical field. Several years later I graduated from nursing school and worked for the next six years as a nurse, primarily in community health nursing, before becoming a SAHM.

During the six years that I worked as a nurse, I continued writing by free-lancing for The Catholic Telegraph and by volunteering for a non-profit organization in which I updated its marketing materials and website and wrote fundraising letters. I also completed a course through Long Ridge Writers Group, "Basics of Writing Stories and Articles for Publication". Throughout my adult life, in both professional and personal settings, I have been the “go to” person for editing and proofreading on letters, articles, academic papers, and novels.

Also, during most of my adult life, I have actively taught and/or assisted students from fourth grade through adulthood in various settings. In college I served as a writing tutor during the summer before my senior year in which I helped first-year college students to organize and to write academic papers. I held office hours for one-on-one help, and I offered writing clinics in group settings. As a Faith Formation instructor at my church, I taught faith classes to 9 to 12 year olds, and in the nursing profession, patient education is a primary responsibility of all nurses. These teaching experiences helped me to establish such skills as interpersonal communications, patience and trustworthiness – abilities that are important to have as a tutor.

With these facts in mind, I am offering myself as a tutor to area middle and high school students who would benefit from supplemental instruction in the areas of History/Social Studies, English, Writing, and Language Arts. I am willing to provide as much or as little guidance as is deemed appropriate for your son or daughter. Recommendations and feedback from teachers, counselors, and parents are always welcome. My specialties include grammar, history, research and writing. The following are the types of services available:

Weekly tutoring — I will work with students on school assignments and target supplemental exercises and instruction for their specific needs.

Project-oriented tutoring — I will work with each student one-on-one to produce a quality paper and/or project.

Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to speaking with you and to devising a plan that best meets your family’s needs!

History/Social Studies
I graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.A. in History and a minor in English and with a Writing Certificate. During my junior year, I gained admittance to Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society. Also during my junior year, I interned with the Dayton Daily News in which I provided in-depth research for the book Dayton Ink: The First Century of the Dayton Daily News. My work is recognized on the Acknowledgments page with the other student interns. With my degree, I received proficiency in reading comprehension and writing, the ability to collect and organize data, and the ability to make connections. My students will learn that history is not just trying to memorize information but also taking notes while reading, connecting ideas and making sense of the stories.

English/Grammar
In high school I was an Honors English student. My English teacher during my sophomore year was amazing, and she taught her students the art of diagramming sentences, a fun and useful tool for understanding our language and for learning how parts of a sentence work together. I attended the University of Dayton, earning a B.A. in History with a minor in English and a writing certificate. With this degree combination I earned proficiency in reading comprehension and in writing. I will bring an enthusiasm for the subject and make the study of grammar both interesting and fun.

Writing/Editing/Proofreading
I have a B.A. in History with a minor in English and a Writing Certificate. My coursework included Expository Writing, Advanced Composition, Report Writing, and Business Writing, all of which improved my ability to write and to critique. These classes built my foundation to serve as a writing tutor during the summer before my senior year in which I helped first-year college students, enrolled in the Summer Trial Enrollment Program, to organize and to write academic papers. In my adulthood, my writing experience includes free-lancing for The Catholic Telegraph, coordinating and editing a family newsletter and a patient newsletter, writing fundraising letters, and redesigning and writing marketing content for brochures for a non-profit organization. I also completed a course through Long Ridge Writers Group, Basics of Writing Stories and Articles for Publication. Throughout my adult life, in both professional and personal settings, I have been the “go to” person for editing and proofreading of letters, articles, academic papers, and novels. My students will learn to write to their audiences with an organized structure, relevant content, clear meaning, correct grammar, and precise word choices. I also tutor with a strong emphasis on teaching students to evaluate and to proofread their own work.
