About Nakul

Looking for help preparing for an upcoming exam? Struggling with an assignment? I love psychology, biology, and chemistry and would be excited to help you master the material and strengthen your writing.

A little bit about me… I graduated with a B.S. in Brain and Cognitive Sciences from MIT. In high school, I competed as one of 20 finalists in the USA Biology Olympiad. In my free time I read The Economist and lift weights.

Having studied cognitive science as an undergraduate, I can teach you techniques to aid in memorization and test taking. I am experienced with a variety of software programs and citation styles and am happy to furnish a writing sample upon request. Look forward to talk with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I completed a B.S. in brain and cognitive sciences at MIT. Courses I took included Cellular Neurobiology and the Biochemistry and Pharmacology of Synaptic Transmission. In high school, I competed as one of 20 national finalists in the USA Biology Olympiad.

Chemistry

At Columbia University, I took coursework in general and organic chemistry and completed general chemistry and organic chemistry lab-work. Most recently I worked as a teaching assistant in Organic Chemistry I and II at Wright State University.

Organic Chemistry

I completed a B.S. in brain and cognitive sciences at MIT in 2012. After studying organic chemistry at Columbia University, I worked most recently for two semesters as a teaching assistant for Organic Chemistry I and II at Wright State University.

Organic chemistry is sometimes approached through memorization of a large number of reactions. My philosophy is to focus on the concepts undergirding individual reactions and working to understand why each step in a reaction proceeds. The results of my approach show in my students’ exam performance.

Psychology

My research experience in psychology includes working as a research assistant in an MIT psycholinguistics laboratory and in a cognitive evolution laboratory at Harvard. As part of my coursework at MIT, I wrote a literature review on the effects of emotional valence on explicit memory, designed an experiment examining how emotionally valenced mental imagery enhances explicit memory for words, ran statistical analysis on the data, and analyzed the results.

Study Skills

I completed a B.S. in brain and cognitive sciences at MIT. Having studied cognitive science, I can teach students techniques to aid in memorization and test taking. Additionally, I have worked for two semesters as a supplemental instructor for organic chemistry at Wright State University, where I trained in active teaching techniques that help students perform their best even in challenging courses.
