I became a professional and private tutor in 2000 while I was in college majoring in education. I work with people of all ages, but most of my experience is with high school through adult learners. For me, tutoring is not a job but an opportunity to serve others. I help students in all content areas express themselves through their writing assignments and class presentations. I enjoy guiding them through all stages of the writing process, from start to finish. My personal tutoring style is to connect with students through compassion and humor. I believe relaxed students who feel comfortable have more meaningful, productive sessions.
As a tutor certified through College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), I regularly attend trainings, keeping myself up-to-date on theories, learning styles, and tutoring methods. I also mentor newer tutors and write and present material for tutor training sessions. I have extensive experience teaching adult and adolescent learners as well. I teach college reading strategies, study skills, writing courses, and specialize in APA and MLA writing styles. I think of the formatting questions and issues as puzzles. Bring me any questions you may have. Let us work together!
The tutoring process benefits both the student and tutor. While students gain mastery over their material, tutors learn or experience new things through their tutees. Over my many years helping students with their term papers, I have had the opportunity to experience eye surgery, view Broadway musicals, fight in famous historic battles, walk beside saints and other religious leaders, rescue people as a helicopter medic, and many, many more amazing experiences. I truly enjoy learning new things, and the tutoring session is a wonderful place for us to learn from each other.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I use Publisher almost exclusively to create print materials for my yoga business. I create flyers, brochures, class schedules, and other informative items for students. I upload Publisher content to my company's website, and I also import/export information between the various MS programs.
I am an experienced public speaker. Through the work in my yoga studio and at the college where I also work, I have designed classes and given speeches to small groups and crowds numbering in the hundreds. For example, attending my "Making Yoga Accessible" educational presentation earned recreational therapists CEUs in their field. l also mentor new presenters at the college, guiding them in their speech content, delivery, and self-confidence.
I am a college level academic coach in the Academic Support Center where I work. I research and teach such study skills as learning styles, time management, study strategies, and materials organization. I use VARK, Myers-Briggs, and Gardner's Multiple Intelligence assessments to identify student learning styles and teach them study methods that maximize their natural abilities and potential.
