About Mehrad

As the son of two dedicated and passionate teachers (chemistry and literature), learning has been always my passion. And as much as I enjoy learning, I get a deep sense of gratification by helping others learn. You have probably heard the proverb: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to catch fish and you feed him for a lifetime". To me, learning is a life-long endeavor and it requires persistence and attention to detail.

My attention to detail in studying how things work, while looking at the big picture, led me to study electrical engineering in college (majoring in automation and control systems) and I worked for a couple of years as an engineer. However, my deeply ingrained passion for studying people, human relationships, culture and the role of religion in society eventually drove me to my old roots and I pursued my graduate studies in sociology.

Before going to college, I tutored elementary math, elementary science, history, vocabulary, Farsi, English, Arabic, German, chemistry, physics, and algebra. As a college student, I continued tutoring calculus, algebra, English and German. I also taught classes in computer programming, general computer and computer networks. As a graduate student, I have been a teaching assistant for cultural anthropology, social problems, intro to sociology, philosophy of religion and GIS. I have taught sections in the latter three courses and I have received a certificate of excellence in teaching sociology.

Whether in class or tutoring, I strongly believe in interactive learning to make sure my students have understood the material covered so far before moving to the next step. Student participation, critical thinking, analytical approach and Socratic method have been integral parts of my teaching philosophy in all subjects that I have taught or tutored.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I am a PhD student of sociology and I have got my Master's degree in sociology from the University of Toledo. My experience as graduate student includes working as a TA in Cultural Anthropolgy, Introduction to Sociology, Philosophy of Religion and GIS. I have taught sections in the latter three courses.

Arabic

Arabic language is taught as a foreign language in Iranian schools and I learned the language at a proficient level (beyond what was expected in normal school curriculum). I have also enhanced my knowledge of the language by extensively reading Islamic texts which are in Arabic. I have helped non-native speakers learn Arabic.

Calculus

Calculus was always one of my favorite subjects in school and that was one of the reasons that I chose to study electrical engineering in college. I have tutored calculus at different grades.

Computer Programming

While I was an undergraduate student of electrical engineering, I worked and taught in our computer lab. I have also tutored basics of computers, programming languages (BASIC, SigSys and MatLab) and software.

Electrical Engineering

I have got my Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and have worked for a couple of years as an engineer. When I was an undergraduate student, I was a teaching assistant in Signal & Systems course and taught classes in SIGSYS.

Elementary Math

Math was always one of my favorite subjects in school and that was one of the reasons that I chose to study electrical engineering in college. I have tutored math at different grades.

Elementary Science

I was fascinated with how things work since I was a little kid (and that explains why I ended up studying electrical engineering and working as an engineer). My approach to science was always to get to the bottom of physical concepts and to try to explain physical phenomena through scientific methods. I try to instill the same in my students learning science.

ESL/ESOL

I learned English as a second language (as well as some other languages) and hence, I understand the challenges of learning a foreign language. The key to success in communication in any foreign language is thinking in that language, instead of memorizing words and trying to translate one's thoughts into the target language. That means acquiring mastery of vocabulary and grammar through reading original texts to understand how native speakers use phrases and sentences.

Farsi

Farsi (Persian) is my native language and I am very good in Persian literature. I helped non-native speakers learn Farsi and also helped my classmates in school with Persian literature and grammar.

General Computer

I have grown up with computers since the time they were developed for personal use in the 80s, and all along the way, I have helped people learn how to use them. I have tutored and taught classes on general computer usage, operating systems and software.

Grammar

Grammar may not sound like a fun subject, but proper and clear communication is the key to success in professional as well as everyday life. As the son of a teacher who excelled in teaching grammar, I started honing my grammatical skills from an early age. I helped classmates and friends learn grammar and while tutoring different languages to non-native speakers, emphasizing proper grammar was an integral part of my job.

Macintosh

While I was an undergraduate student of electrical engineering, I worked and taught in our computer lab. I was versatile with both PC and Mac and troubleshooting Mac computers in the lab was part of my responsibilities. I have tutored Mac OS in and outside university

Networking (Computer)

While I was an undergraduate student of electrical engineering, I worked and taught in our computer lab. I have also tutored basics of computers, programming languages (BASICS, SigSys and MatLab), software and networking. I have tutored networking after graduation as well. I have also obtained certificates in networking.

Reading

I started reading books at the age of 5 and newspapers at the age of 7 and reading has been always my most favorite hobby, for pleasure of enjoying literature to the necessity of learning about new ideas and thoughts. Critical thinking and contemplating what is behind the words is the most important part of reading and that is what I help my students practice.

Religion

I am a PhD student of sociology and I have got my Master's degree in sociology from the University of Toledo. My experience as graduate student includes working as a TA in Cultural Anthropolgy, Introduction to Sociology, Philosophy of Religion and GIS. I have taught sections in the latter three courses. My area of research all over these years has been the interaction between religion and society.

Social Studies

I am a PhD student of sociology and I have got my Master's degree in sociology from the University of Toledo. My experience as graduate student includes working as a TA in Cultural Anthropolgy, Introduction to Sociology, Philosophy of Religion and GIS. I have taught sections in the latter three courses. I emphasize critical thinking and analytical approach in my tutoring and classroom teaching.

Sociology

I am a PhD student of sociology and I have got my Master's degree in sociology from the University of Toledo. My experience as graduate student includes working as a TA in Cultural Anthropolgy, Introduction to Sociology, Philosophy of Religion and GIS. I have taught sections in the latter three courses.

A genius behind the accent

The title says most of it. Mehrad really knows what he's talking about but admittedly has an accent, but you'll quickly get the hang of it. Just roll with it and don't be afraid to ask him to repeat something if you don't understand and he'll be more than happy to help. As long as you try he won't mind if one concept takes nearly the entire time allotted, this happened to me at least twice. All in
