I have worked as a teacher for twenty years, and I have to say that I have never lost my enthusiasm for teaching. In my twenty-year career , I worked with teaching adults to attain their GED and cannot express in words the satisfaction I have received in seeing these students receiving and making the most of their second chance to succeed in academics. Since, for one reason or another, the school system failed these people, I made it my business to alter the typical classroom setting and make the lessons relevant and easier to understand. I was frequently complimented on my ability to break down the math to fundamentals and build them up in a way that was easy to follow and understand. I believe that learning a thorough understanding of fundamentals will make the more complex material much easier to grasp.
I now want to change directions and work with the youth in society. I have always believed, and experience has verified, that the bell shaped curve that dictates that majority of students have average intelligence and do average work is simply not true. I believe that a high majority of students can succeed in academics if they have they right attitude and given the right instruction. There is no doubt that the nation has raised the bar on what is considered to be academic success, and I believe this will challenge the student and teacher in a positive way in the years to come. My primary goal as an educator is to instill confidence in students, have them take pride in their education, and use it as a springboard to achievement in their future endeavors. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a state teaching certificate for grades 1-8. I have spent several years teaching this level as a substitute. I have also completed several at home tutoring positions working with students in this area.
