About Ed

I have been a teacher/tutor/role model for as long as I can remember. As the oldest of three boys in a single parent family, I have been a father figure, friend, and teacher for all my life. Even now, my brothers come to me to teach them how to do work on their cars, fix their appliances and gadgets, and help with their academics. I have spent many years working at the YMCA as a camp counselor, which helped fortify my abilities and strategies used in progressively interacting with children. I am a recent graduate of the University of Akron, majoring in Middle Level Education, Science and Language Arts concentration areas. As humbly as possible, I am very proud of my 3.8 cumulative GPA. Combining these experiences, my background encompasses both formal and informal learning environments, as well as social and academic tutoring. I love tutoring because I can devote all my attention to the task at hand without the normal classroom distractions; no peers goofing around, no bells, etc. Learning is about making a personal connection to the information, and though tutoring, these connections come naturally as the tutor and student work together to find what the student already knows in relation to the new information. My personal approach to teaching revolves around leveling with the student as a human being, and showing them that their ideas are valuable. Growing off the student's understanding that they are respected and important, I can start to show them the relationship between what they already know and the new information, making a deliberate effort to bridge the two ideas. I know that learning is about purposefully building on the student's pre-existing schema while intentionally guiding them to make their discoveries and connections.

I have tutored several students, both in and out of school settings, ages ranging from 7 to 18, mostly for periods longer than four weeks. Most recently, I have tutored a 10 year old girl with ADHD for seven months in all subject areas. Before that, I tutored two 18 year old ESL (English as a Second Language) students for four months in a school setting, working with them to develop their written and spoken English skills. In conjunction, I also taught a week-long Shakespeare unit to a class of ESL students, consisting of 12 students. Also during that time, I tutored an 11 year old boy with Asperger's Syndrome for 5 months, specifically working on his reading skills. Over a year ago, I tutored two brothers, 7 and 12 years old, in all in all subject areas for 3 months. Specifically in a public school setting, I have taught 7th and 8th grade Science classes on more than 10 occasions, covering various topics. Alongside my tutoring, the education courses at the university have allowed me to spend countless hours of observation in various school settings. I also have experience tutoring adults who have returned to college- one with College Algebra for 3 months, and another with Pre-calculus for 2 months. On several occasions I have tutored my grandmother and her friends with using their computers. We have addressed basic computer knowledge, using hardware and software correctly, using and exploring the internet, and paying bills online. Being able to speak with students (regardless of age) with empathy and understanding is crucial in building the necessary trust between student and teacher. No matter the content or people involved, teaching is a two-way street.

In my very essence, I am a scientist. I am curious, resourceful, creative, and intuitive. I love to know how things work, and I love creating wonderful things from nothing. To satisfy the Science concentration of my degree at the university, I have taken Earth Science, Geology, Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Physical Science, and Life Science. These were all a pleasure to take, but I understand that it was my internal drive to learn the content that helped me excel in all of them. I have many hobbies that revolve around electrical engineering, biology, chemistry, and physics. I am an outstanding science teacher because I know and love the content, and I can share my excitement and knowledge of the content with others.

For several semesters, I have joked that I will be getting my degree in writing papers; education classes are ironically writing intensive, though we have learned in education that writing a paper is an insufficient gauge of how well a student knows the content. With that in mind, and in combination with my Language Arts concentration classes, I write well and am able to help others do the same. Writing is like science in that it has order and rules, but also has a heavy emphasis on creativity and individuality. I am an outstanding writing teacher and proofreader because I have been trained to help students write creatively and academically through my Middle Level Language Arts courses, as well as trained to be an excellent academic writer through my experiences in my college career.

More than anything, I am excited to teach. An opportunity to teach is an opportunity not only to give back, but also to learn myself. Be it a one time refresher, or an extended stay, teaching helps me help myself and others, and that is truly all I want to do in life. Please feel free to contact me at any time to discuss scheduling a meeting; I pride myself on being available and punctual. Hope to speak with you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
