Cedarville (Elementary Education)
Hi. I love tutoring. I specialize in math, reading, phonics, and writing. I began tutoring in 2001 while I was in college. After graduating with a major in Elementary Education, I began teaching third and fourth grades. When I began my family, I stopped teaching, but I continued tutoring. I love helping students learn to succeed. This year begins my 15th year of tutoring. I have tutored private families, worked for an after school tutoring company, and I currently work as a tutor hired by the public school. I have tutored children in ages ranging from 4 years old (preschool) up to 16 years old (sophomore). I prefer working with elementary subjects. I have mostly supported my students by helping them understand and apply math, reading, phonics for reading and spelling, and writing. I have also helped students with language, science and history.
My goal is to help the students understand the material thoroughly while showing them some unique games or simple ways of solving the problems. I want them to succeed. I am able to work well with all age groups. I can help them understand the material using the different senses (visual, auditory, and tactile) to find the student's best learning strategy.
For younger children, I like to use manipulatives in math. Using tactile objects increase the student's understanding of adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing. We can use many things for manipulatives such as pretzels, straws, or popsicle sticks. I have created a matching game to help students memorize the multiplication tables.
To help students improve reading, I work with the student by modeling the correct way to read. I read the passage first to them so they can hear the difficult words pronounced, hear the correct inflection in my voice, and hear how to read smoothly. Then we read the selection together, until the student feels confident to be successful reading it on his/her own. I have had great success with this choral reading method.
Both reading and spelling need a good foundation in phonics. I work with phonics flash cards that teach the many sounds letters can make. There are over 70 different phonograms (letter sounds). I also teach the student rules for why the letter makes that sound, if there is a rule. I apply the phonics we learned in our reading. As we read, I will pause and discuss the different sounds a letter makes and show the student the flashcard that we learned about the sound. Knowing some letters or combination of letters make more than three sounds helps the student become a much more successful reader.
Writing can be intimidating if you have not been given the tools to succeed. I provide these tools to the students. Learning to take our oral communication and put it on paper helps students succeed in writing. I show them prewriting goals and activites that provide a purpose for writing. Using the full writing process of prewriting, drafts, and a final product will produce quality writing for the student. Using transition words and good sentence order makes writing more interesting to read.
I would love to help your child succeed in school. I can help him or her learn the material successfully with my over 15 years of tutoring. I have tutored over 20 children. Kimberly F. is very patient and caring. Kimberly really takes time to make sure that her students learn the material that she teaches and that they retain the material later upon review. Kimberly is a joy to have tutoring my children!
Kimberly, was everything I had hope for when I began looking for a tutor for my 11 year old daughter. She was very knowledgeable and patient when working with my daughter.
I feel very confident that she will give my daughter all the tools to be a great writer and student.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education K-8. I have taught grades 3rd, 4th, and 7th in a private school. I have been tutoring for 15 years.
I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I have tutored since 2001. I have taught 3rd, 4th, and 7th grades. I have successfully taught children to read or improved their reading by teaching them the phonograms and their numerous sounds.
As an educator, I have spent many years helping students learn the sounds of letters and how to apply them phonetically with accuracy to their reading. Then we look for those sounds in the words of our story and review why the letter or letters make that sound. Next, I model what the passage should sound like in the following areas of fluency: accuracy, inflection, and speed. Then we read the passage together repeatedly until they are ready to read it on their own silently. Finally, when the student is ready to read aloud to me, he has overcome most of the obstacles that have been preventing his ease with reading. I have found this choral reading pattern to be very beneficial for building confidence in each student. I have seen my students succeed in their reading and comprehension levels.
