About Sean

As a private tutor over the past ten years I have come to embrace a simple truth: a tutor is not sought out when things are going according to plan. I embrace every opportunity to help someone through a difficult situation and find understanding because that is the essence of tutoring. I have experience in every aspect of the industry and know it well -- I have tutored, managed tutors, and ran a state sponsored after-school program for families that couldn't afford academic support. I began my tutoring career as a graduate assistant at Cleveland State University while working towards a Master's degree in philosophy. I helped students with deductive logic. In this capacity I gave lectures and held tutoring hours, but I found that the individual, hands-on approach of tutoring best suited me and provided the most satisfaction. I've been working with students in an array of subjects ever since.

Throughout my career as a tutor I have worked with many students in nearly every imaginable situation. Whether a student is struggling to pass a course, facing a daunting standardized test, or just requiring some support to do their best, my approach is the same. I will establish a clear focus, compose an individualized study plan, and equip the student with all the necessary tools for excellence.

For me the joy of tutoring comes through its ends: helping students to achieve their academic goals and realize what they are capable of doing when they put their minds to it. Through accomplishing this I measure my own success as a professional.

I am well-versed in a wide range of mathematics, from pre-algebra through calculus and everything in between. Whether it's working through a math course or preparing for the math portion of a standardized test, I excel at helping students to learn the basic concepts and refine their problem solving skills. Since math is a relatively sequential subject, it is important to identify one's strengths & weaknesses at the outset and build from the ground up. Likewise, no two people learn the same way so it helps in being comfortable with explaining concepts in a variety of manners. Lastly, at times it is necessary for me to assign additional practice work for the student to complete in order to build confidence and a mastery of the material. I do not shy away from this, nor in holding the student accountable for his or her efforts.

I have always been a person who is passionate about the sciences. That being said, the science portion of the ACT is more about reading comprehension, problem solving, and general test-taking strategies (such as time management). In preparing for this test I work hard to bring the student up to his or her full potential in these areas. One must not only answer the questions correctly but also do it at a fast pace to succeed. As they say, "practice makes perfect," so I am given to assign a bit of homework to ensure the student is up to speed and well-rehearsed for the big test. Also, at the outset of tutoring I encourage students to take a diagnostic test if they haven't already taken the ACT. I have worked with dozens of students in preparing for the ACT, and I have an established record for improving scores.

As someone who has gone through graduate school in philosophy I am no stranger to writing papers and all the other wonderful things that come along with doing so. Thus, I am well-prepared to assist you in your grammar needs. When it comes to the ACT English section one must become familiar with a myriad of grammar & punctuation rules, along with general test-taking strategies. As for ACT Reading the main focus is reading comprehension, as you may have guessed, and developing sound test-taking skills to minimize the amount of time spent per passage. I recommend the student to take a diagnostic test at the beginning of tutoring if they haven't already taken the ACT. I believe it is important to build on both one's strengths and weaknesses in order to achieve the highest possible score.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions regarding the subjects I cover, my availability, rates & policies, etc. I look forward to scheduling our first session and working together towards academic success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Fantastic

He was great at helping my son learn new concepts in his Algebra II class. He was behind in class and with the help of Sean he is catching up. He is able to explain things in a way that my son is truly understanding.
