My love for teaching English came slowly, and then all at once. I should have realized when I got a near perfect score on the writing and reading sections of my SAT that I would become a teacher. I learned of my love for grammar, and English reading/writing in general, freshman year of college when my mathematics major friend asked me to edit his paper, and I was up until 3am, giddy with excitement at how fun it was to edit the paper. I changed my major to English writing the next day. As time went on, I tutored students in the writing lab while I was studying abroad in Austria, and was offered a student job as copy editor of the university's newspaper when I returned to the main campus. I have worked with students of all learning styles and personal focuses - whether you find yourself preferring math and hating English, or loving health class and just want to become a better writer, I can help you as I have many others!
What I love about tutoring in my experience with friends, classmates, and other students is helping someone learn how to express themselves in a way they couldn't before. Too often students hear only where they go wrong in their writing and become convinced they cannot write at all. I disagree. I believe with the right positive reinforcement, the correct amount of appropriate correction, and a willingness to learn, anyone can exponentially increase the quality of their writing. A stickler for grammar and flow, I will not allow anything sub-par to hold a student back. Tutoring and teaching is the best way I can help turn uncertain students into personally convicted writers. I personally believe the best teachers are the ones who empower their students and help them discover their own voice.
I specialize in English writing and grammar. I also have done personal focuses in poetry and editing in traditional style grammar, as well as AP style grammar, throughout my undergraduate degree. Because of this, I work on all aspects of writing when working through essays. Likewise, I understand critical reading because of a deep understanding of literature and good writing. I can tutor for SAT English writing and critical reading, grammar, MLA and APA style citations, Literature, and English as a general language.

I am also willing to do a free consultation/interview if that would make you more comfortable. My love for teaching English came slowly, and then all at once. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a Mary Kay consultant in the past year. During that time I passed certifications regarding colors, foundations, and specifics such as eye or mouth shape manipulation. I have also done makeup for proms, weddings, daily use, and date nights. I have also conducted many makeup consultations, giving instruction on skin care, how to do makeup, and why certain products are use.
I have been able to correct grammar even before I knew the reasons why that comma didn't go there, and you really shouldn't use "that", you should use ", which..." Since then, I have taken courses on grammar both as a teaching method and in news editing. I have also had practice in tutoring for essays. I was copy editor for my university's news paper as well.
