About Atsuko

I was raised in Japan, a country known for its excellence in top worldwide math scores. I’ve been teaching mathematics for 5 years at a private gifted school here in Cincinnati and Japanese for 10 years. The school specializes in students with above average IQ scores. Teaching 5th through 8th grade students is particularly appealing because students are just beginning to comprehend abstract ideas. At this age, they begin to learn critical thinking skills, a strong academic foundation required for advanced learning.

At the school where I teach Pre-Algebra, I provide individualized student-centered instructions to help students achieve their maximum potential in mathematics.
I focus on strengths and weaknesses for each student and provide individualized instructions that allow them to succeed. As preparation for Pre-Algebra class, I solve problems on math worksheets before I hand them out to students to ensure accuracy. I use real life examples in lessons to motivate students. As a result, one of my 5th grade students received 14 out of 25 questions on the 8th grade level mathematic competition (AMC8), which is a great achievement for a 5th grader.

I take my academic tutoring professionally. It is my policy that students receive a good quality education. If parents and students are not satisfied with my tutoring, I will not charge for that lesson.

I am looking forward to helping you succeed in mathematics. Students, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Japanese

I was born in Japan and lived there for 23 years until I moved to the United States. I have taught variety levels of Japanese classes at Schilling School for Gifted Children for ten years. Prior to the teaching experience, I worked for a few Japanese companies for five years.

In my Japanese classes, I use a lot of practical examples and also, visual and hands on materials including the Studio Ghibli movies such as, "My Neighbor Totoro' and "Kiki's Delivery Service", or other Anime movies.

Atsuko-sensei has really helped me to memorize my vocab and understand Japanese particles for my Japanese tests and midterm. She's also really good for learning interesting things about Japan's culture and history.
