I have worked with students in areas of reading such as phonemic awareness, phonics, sight words, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension as well as students in elementary math. I have also worked with students who have disabilities either with a learning disability or physical disability including students with ADHD and autism.

I love working with students one-on-one because you get to know them. I work with children by making it fun and engaging so that they do not realize it is work. Making it fun takes away the "have to" aspect of learning. I make it engaging by interacting with them while practicing the concepts that they are struggling with per their individualized "prescription" that I have set. I love seeing how much they grow in their learning.

I am flexible with time. While I do have a 3 hour cancellation policy, I do allow for makeups. I am also flexible with the location.

I look forward to working with you and your child. Thank you!

Grammar

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked in elementary education for eleven years. I love elementary especially kindergarten. Kindergarten is an exciting time in a young one's life; new adventures, changes, and even relationships. I love working with all subjects in elementary including reading and phonics, and I have worked countless hours one-on-one with students who were struggling with those skills I gather data, find out what they need, and work from there. I also did the quarterly assessments in kindergarten as well as the state assessment.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have worked with many elementary students in math. I believe in working on skills that the child is struggling with but practicing on learned skills at the same time. This way they do not lose those skills already mastered. I love one-on-one because you really get to know the child and what works. I also like to do interactive lessons that are engaging and fun.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have worked with Kindergarten and First grade students on phonics for 12 years. Phonics is the ability to connect the sound that letters make (phoneme) to the actual letter patterns (grapheme). It involves decoding written words in order to read text which aides in fluency and comprehension. I believe it is essential to get the basics down then work from there.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I am a very organized person and some would say a little compulsive/obsessive but to me one needs to be a little in order to keep papers and tasks organized and on schedule. I can help with organization and time management that will keep any student on task and get work completed because I have already helped many students with this. I have worked with junior high and high school students with prioritizing tasks, organizing papers into a categorized binder, notetaking, strategies, mnemonics, and time management skills.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

I have had of experience with students having ADD/ADHD. I try to work on their interests and expand on that. However, with a child who has ADD/ADHD you do not want to excite. They need to stay calm and focused but also with lots of breaks. This is the area of the biggest struggle for children with this disorder. Every child is different. It is a matter of finding out what works.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

My experience has been that for the last four years I have been working with autistic students at the district where I work. Each one is so different, it is a rewarding challenge to find out how they learn and expand on that. I believe that everyone learns differently. It just a little patience and time to find out how. From there it is just getting materials and lesson together to help them succeed.
Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

Reading is my passion. I love to read and I love to help students with their reading. I have worked with many elementary students on comprehension, phonics, phonological awareness, phonological decoding, orthographic coding, and fluency. I have given students assessments that tell me where the break is in their reading ability. To know this means that you know the child's strengths and weaknesses and where to start with remediation. This is a valuable tool with dyslexia because knowing where to start working with the student will help keep the child from getting frustrated plus it will hone in on the skills that are lacking that may be causing the whole problem. My approach is to work using target specific games that will enrich as well as practice already learned skills.
Phonics,

Special Needs,

Special Needs

I have worked with special needs students for last six years. On a personal level, my husband has cerebral palsy and my son has dysgraphia so I am quite familiar with special needs. Since I have worked in Special education and have my Special Education degree, I know first hand what works and what does not. Each child is different and what works on one may not on another. It is a matter of finding what does and expanding on it. I give mini assessments to see where the child is at and then work from there. I think you must do hands-on activities and make them engaging while educational--keep them moving and thinking--that seems to work the best.

Good Tutor- Very informative

We found Melissa to be very informative about reading tests and assessment. She was very interested in helping our child correct a few phonics issues. We appreciated her guidance and helpful tips which we have already started implementing. Thank you Melissa for your time and caring attitude.
