I specialize in tutoring reading and math. I have been in the public school system for 23 years. I have my bachelor's degree from Grand Canyon University as well as my Master's. I graduated summa cum laude with a grade point average of 4.00. I have my certification in regular education (K-3) as well as special education (PK-12). I have had extensive training in reading assessments such as DIBELS, DRA, and QRI. I have also been a teacher administer for PARCC in ELA and math.

I have worked with students in areas of reading such as phonemic awareness, phonics, sight words, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension as well as students in elementary math. I have also worked with students who have disabilities either with a learning disability or physical disability including students with ADHD and autism.

I love working with students one-on-one because you get to know them. I work with children by making it fun and engaging so that they do not realize it is work. Making it fun takes away the "have to" aspect of learning. I make it engaging by interacting with them while practicing the concepts that they are struggling with per their individualized "prescription" that I have set. I love seeing how much they grow in their learning.

I am flexible with time. While I do have a 3 hour cancellation policy, I do allow for makeups. I am also flexible with the location.

I have had of experience with students having ADD/ADHD. I try to work on their interests and expand on that. However, with a child who has ADD/ADHD you do not want to excite. They need to stay calm and focused but also with lots of breaks. This is the area of the biggest struggle for children with this disorder. Every child is different. It is a matter of finding out what works.

My experience has been that for the last four years I have been working with autistic students at the district where I work. Each one is so different, it is a rewarding challenge to find out how they learn and expand on that. I believe that everyone learns differently. It just a little patience and time to find out how. Reading is my passion. I love to read and I love to help students with their reading. I have worked with many elementary students on comprehension, phonics, phonological awareness, phonological decoding, orthographic coding, and fluency. I have given students assessments that tell me where the break is in their reading ability. To know this means that you know the child's strengths and weaknesses and where to start with remediation. This is a valuable tool with dyslexia because knowing where to start working with the student will help keep the child from getting frustrated plus it will hone in on the skills that are lacking that may be causing the whole problem. My approach is to work using target specific games that will enrich as well as practice already learned skills.

I have worked with special needs students for last six years. On a personal level, my husband has cerebral palsy and my son has dysgraphia so I am quite familiar with special needs. Since I have worked in Special education and have my Special Education degree, I know first hand what works and what does not. Each child is different and what works on one may not on another. It is a matter of finding what does and expanding on it. I give mini assessments to see where the child is at and then work from there. I think you must do hands-on activities and make them engaging while educational--keep them moving and thinking--that seems to work the best.

Excellent Tutor

Melissa has been working with my first grader for the past two months on his reading and has been wonderful to work with!! She is very patient with him and makes the lessons fun. She has been very flexible with scheduling which has been a big help as well. I look forward to continuing these tutoring sessions through the summer and watching my son progress more and more.
