About Kyra

I'm an MIT student looking to pursue a career in teaching and education policy. I have several years of tutoring experience and have helped students aged 13-22 in a variety of subjects. I am a math major and math is the main subject that I tutor, but can also help in middle/high school level reading, writing, and sciences. In addition, I can do test prep for the ACT and SAT (including most subject tests). Most recently, I have tutored a 10th grader in Geometry (her test scores went from C's to A's), as well as a junior in college who was taking Integral Calculus (he scored a 95 on an exam that had an average of 76). Also in the recent past, I've worked as a volunteer at the Cambridge Community Center providing middle school students with weekly science experiments and homework help. I received a score of 2340 on my SAT as well as 5's on several AP tests before furthering my education at MIT, where I have been exposed to several higher level math topics.

However, academic performance doesn't automatically imply teaching skills. I know plenty of smart people who wouldn't make good teachers or tutors. Fortunately, I am patient with students and capable of explaining a topic in different ways and approaching material from different angles to ensure actual understanding instead of just memorization.

A lot of students like to think that math and sciences are boring and useless. My goal in tutoring is to keep students engaged and having fun, while also giving realistic examples and helping them understand that STEM subjects are in fact useful in the real world.

In addition to relating learning to real life, I like to teach students that actually internalizing material is better than just memorizing facts and formulas. It's important to know *why* something is what it is. As an example, I will go through the derivation of the distance formula with a geometry student so that in case the student forgets the actual equation, they will be able to figure it out again in an exam setting. Things that are memorized can easily be forgotten, but things that are understood at a deeper level stick with a student much more long term. It is for that reason, I believe, that I can and will make an effective tutor for your student.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Differential Equations

I first took Differential Equations my senior year in high school, and took a similar class (albeit much harder) my freshman year at MIT. As a mathematics major at MIT I have continued to use the skills I developed though the higher math courses I've taken since then.
