I am a master teacher with 25 years' experience, a M.ed in Language and Literacy Development, and a BA in English, Psychology and Special Education. I have gone through extensive training to become a F.A.S.T certified reading tutor. My experience in the classroom includes preschool through eighth grade; my experience with tutoring students includes special needs preschool children through high school students preparing for the ACT. I have a particular interest in teaching reading - decoding, fluency and comprehension, but have received additional training (with Steve Tattum) to tutor mathematics through eighth grade. I treat my students respectfully and would expect to be treated in the same manner.
Once I understand a child's learning style, I like to bring developmentally manipulative and concrete materials to our tutoring session, and have found that strategy to be immensely successful. The F.A.S.T. reading system uses a phonetic board to teach decoding; I have used it successfully with pre-K through 6th grade students (though younger children (through 4th grade) seem to enjoy it most.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
