Since my senior year in high school I knew I wanted to have a career in the accounting department. From looking at financial statements from different types of companies, I had always wondered how they operated and functioned. With this type of interest in mind, I went straight to college to pursue a degree in accounting, in which I completed in May of 2014 with summa cum laude. After completing the program, I realized that my former college did not have any resources to an accounting tutor, so I presented the idea to my professors and was initially hired as a para-professional accounting tutor for the college.
After I was hired on, I realized that just knowing about the subject alone was not going to help other students. I made tremendous effort in learning different teaching methods and styles, so I would be able to present the accounting concepts and materials to all types of students in various ways. The combinations of my knowledge about accounting and different learning techniques provide each student I tutor to have a chance to learn at their own pace and own understanding. I find great personal satisfaction when I find out the student(s) have succeeded in their class, or just gained a bit more knowledge about accounting in general. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
