Teaching and learning go together. They have always gone together for me. A love of learning compelled me to pursue my Bachelor's Degree in English and my teaching certification for grades 7-12. Graduating magna cum laude was an honor and proof that a love of learning coupled with hard work and persistence lead to success. After teaching high school English and pursuing my Master's Degree, I turned my attention to raising my own children and instilling in them that same love of learning and commitment to hard work. During that time, I have volunteered in elementary school classrooms and continued to teach and interact with youth in recreational settings. Most recently, I have been employed as a university tutor for students with learning differences where I assisted students in achieving academic success by teaching them study skills and learning strategies as well as assisting them with their coursework.
I specialize in English/Language Arts instruction. My experience is broad--from upper elementary through high school, composition and grammar to literature and public speaking. I also love to assist students with ACT/SAT prep and have students who have seen marked improvement in their test scores after working through my test prep sessions. During tutoring sessions, students can expect to be challenged in their critical thinking and reading skills. As students learn to think and read critically, their writing will also improve. My goal for each tutoring session is that students be challenged to think and read and write at a higher level than they were thinking, reading, and writing before. I will work through the writing and revising process with students so that they become stronger, more independent communicators. I will assign relevant homework and provide periodic progress reports.
Meeting times and places can be arranged to suit the student. I will always ask for feedback from students and from parents. If you are not satisfied with the tutoring, you will not be billed for the time.
I look forward to meeting you and nurturing your love of learning! Teaching and learning go together. They have always gone together for me. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching Bible studies for twenty years to a variety of age groups ranging from young children to adults. I currently teach Bible study to Jr. High and high school students. I have studied the Bible in church contexts as well as academic contexts.
As a high school teacher, I emphasized organization, note taking, test taking skills and other important study skills. I will assist students in organizing their materials as well as the information they are gathering in their courses so that they can be successful in whatever course they take. Helping students organize, take meaningful notes, and develop helpful review skills will increase the likelihood of their academic success.
