A full-time teacher working for three years, I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of students. I am certified to teach pre-k through third grade. My main grade level is Kindergarten, but I have taught some first grade, and also tutored third grade and fifth grade.
I am particularly capable with working with ESL students, as the school I work at is primarily English as a second language. My last class consisted of over 90% ESLs. I can assist with vocabulary, speaking and writing English for beginners as well as comprehension.
As a teacher, my goal is always to make learning exciting and engaging, but also meaningful. If a child cannot connect to the content, how can we expect them to learn it? I apply all subjects to real life situations and scenarios, getting more detailed and realistic with older students.
Lessons may be fun and silly but they will have structure and align to appropriate content standards. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Tutored third grade in preparation for the OAA. Participated in an after school program and helped students k-8 with homework and projects for a year and a half. Also tutored students in Kindergarten and 5th going into 6th grade in all subject areas.
I have taught kindergarten two years, and ESL students as well with little to know writing experience. The basics begin with fine motor skills and strengths, then holding a pencil and making lines and then moving into letters and words.
As a kindergarten teacher, it is very important for students early on to learn and understand phonics. From the very beginning this is my focus, with letters then sounds then grouping and finally reading. I have had significant experience with this in regards to ESL students, so I know the struggles and strategies to be effective.
Teaching students how to read is the first step in their success and I've had three years in the classroom to develop my ability to teach it. It goes beyond just being able to sound out words but to be able to comprehend and retain the information that was read as well. These are necessary and vital skills I've worked very hard to develop in students. I have done this for three years as a Kindergarten teacher, first grade split teacher, fifth grade tutor, a second grade tutor and also an OAA third grade prep tutor.
