About Sara Marie

I have been teaching music since 1992 and tutoring since 1999, and am currently pursuing an Ed.S. (Education Specialist) post-master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction with licensure. I will have additional studies in secondary education, as well as a music endorsement. I have an MBA, from which I graduated with a 4.0 GPA. My BA is in political science and international relations theory, and I nearly have enough undergraduate music courses to have a second major in music. In addition, I earned a certificate in teaching students with reading difficulties from The University of London, so I have worked with dyslexic and autistic students. I also am Suzuki and Kodaly trained.

TUTORING: I create individual lesson plans for every student! I'm also happy to communicate with classroom instructors, and I'll provide regular communication with parents. My focus is seeing the student succeed, and I'll do whatever is within my power- researching methods and ideas, meeting with parents, advocating for the student, etc.

MUSIC: I make lessons fun, engaging, interesting and modern. We learn the fundamentals, yes - absolutely; however, I also make sure that students have songs, activities and take-home music that will inspire and encourage them. Between the fun prizes and the 6'6" grand piano, students feel at home in my home studio and want to return every week. While I am currently rebuilding my studio after taking a few years off from teaching, in the past my retention rate has been 95-98% month over month. My students stay with me because I keep them coming back ... and learning! :)

In my graduate schoolwork I am writing 6,000-10,000 per week and obtaining straight As. Whether it's creative writing, news reporting (I wrote for The Washington Times and other outlets), research (I'm most familiar with APA but can adapt to most styles of writing), or essay writing, I have the grammar, organizational, formatting and academic knowledge to support the student.

I am extremely caring and thorough while making tutoring and enrichment sessions fun! Please ask me about packages to decrease your price per session. I look forward to partnering with you to help your child succeed!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I have been working with autistic students since 1999 both in music and tutoring. I understand their special needs and unique behaviors. I am able to develop a trusting relationship with them through working with a parent and making sure I do whatever that student needs to relate to me. I also work to discover whether the student enjoys music, as this can even be applied in academics. I am earning a post-master's Ed.S. (Education Specialist) in curriculum and instruction.

Business

I have an MBA (4.0 GPA), am a member of the Delta Mu Delta business honor society, and have owned two large businesses over the past two decades.

Common Core

I am familiar with the common core standards and curriculum, and have been tutoring in accordance with them for the past few years in Ohio. I am earning a post-masters degree, called an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) in curriculum and instruction. Through this degree program, I am earning state teacher licensure, which involves knowledge of common core standards and aligned curriculum.

Dyslexia

I earned a certificate in teaching students with reading disabilities from the University of London. Since, I have worked with multiple children with varying degrees of dyslexia or related disorders and have successfully helped them to progress. In most situations, I have also communicated with the classroom teacher to further support the student as school. I am earning a post-master's Ed.S. (Education Specialist) in curriculum and instruction.

Elementary (K-6th)

More than half of my students since 1999 have been K-5. I am very familiar with the development of children at each grade level, common core aligned curriculum, and how to identify issues preventing learning in other subjects. I'm adding an elementary endorsement to my Ed.S., too.

ESL/ESOL

I am currently earning a TESOL (ESL) certificate from Arizona State University through a several part online course in teaching ESOL/ESOL students. In addition, I am a recommended ESL tutor from a local private school for its international students. I have a deep background in foreign languages, and use that knowledge to help students understand English grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, sayings, and texts. I do not have a specific tutoring method; rather, I develop a plan of action for every ESL student based on his/her current abilities and goals.

General Music

I began music lessons when I was 2 1/2 years old and starting teaching private piano lessons at 12 yo. I nearly earned a second undergraduate degree in music, but am currently earning a music endorsement on my Ed.S. post-masters degree. In addition, I have had graduate-level music education courses, earned a Kodaly Level 1 certification, and completed Suzuki "Every Child Can" and Unit 1 certification. I have written curriculum for group music lessons as well as private lessons, and even for other music teachers.

Marketing

In the businesses I have owned, marketing has been my focus. I've specifically been a marketing consultant since 2013. I had marketing as part of my MBA and am currently taking additional graduate-level marketing courses at Walden University.

Phonics

From my studies of dyslexia and the certificate at The University of London, I have a very detailed understanding of phonics and their use in learning to read. Both in ESL and reading courses, I have used phonics to help children learn how to sound out words and to better understand the English language. I teach phonetic skills (not just sight words) to all of my reading students.

Piano

I have been playing the piano since I was 2 1/2yo and teaching it since 1992. I taught from 1992-2015, took some time off from teaching to earn a masters degree, and am now rebuilding my studio! I studied piano from a professor at Ohio Wesleyan University from age 8-19, at The Ohio State University and at Belmont University. I am trained in the Suzuki method and teach my students in combination with the traditional method of learning to play. In the past, I have had 20-30 students on my roster, and plan to build back up to that number. I welcome children between the ages of 4 and 17, as well as adults.

Political Science

My BA was in political science! I had American, judicial and international coursework. I also took grad level classes while earning my undergrad. I have an MBA, and am now earning a post-master's Ed.S. (Education Specialist) in curriculum and instruction.

Social Studies

I am earning a social sciences endorsement as part of my Ed.S. degree. My BA is in political science, so I had many history courses. I've served on city council and have an in depth knowledge of civics, government and legislation.

Songwriting

In addition to my experience playing various instruments since I was 2 1/2 yo, I am a songwriter as well! At Belmont University, I studied songwriting more formally. However, in high school, I wrote dozens of songs and recorded many of them on an album when I was 17yo. I understand both the lyrical and musical elements of songwriting, as well as arranging for multiple instruments and voice.

Study Skills

I graduated from my masters degree with a 4.0 GPA and I am a successful student myself. I am currently earning a post masters degree as an education specialist in curriculum and instruction, and I'm very familiar with explaining to students different strategies and techniques for studying, memory jogging, memorizing certain sequences or fax, affiliations to help them remember details, etc.
