About Chelsey

Hello, students! I am a third year high school English teacher and have had three years of clinical field experience in various grade levels and subjects. For as long as I can recall, I have always wanted to be a teacher. Some of my earliest memories involve getting in trouble with my mom for using our second floor wall as my chalkboard for all my stuffed animal "students." Throughout my school years I sought out ways I could be in teaching positions, whether it was tutoring my fellow classmates and younger students or being involved in internships with my school's teachers. In high school I was selected to be the clarinet section leader for three out of four years in band. I loved being able to help students find new ways to learn, as I still do.

I love teaching and tutoring because I love working through problems with students to help them fulfill their learning potential. There is more to teaching and tutoring than just imparting knowledge on to another person; it is to learn from your students as well. I work with the student to help them learn the way they need to learn and to help them reach the coveted "Aha!" moment. The teacher and the student should both experience this moment during lessons. I create lessons depending on the type of learner the student is and what their interests are. I try to make learning fun, interesting, and relevant to each student's individual life.

As I stated above, I am entering my third year of teaching freshmen level English courses and my second year as the school yearbook adviser. I have developed curriculum that adheres to Ohio's state teaching standards. I teach writing skills that are needed to produce several types of works, such as literary analysis, creative writing, narratives, and research essays. My curriculum involves analyzing and responding to many genres of texts like Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird," Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," William Shakespeare's "The Tempest," as well as nonfiction pieces both in print and found in a media source. My classes are broken into two groups which I have labeled as "academic" and "advanced." "Academic" students are those who have expressed no interest in going to college and prefer to get into vocational studies later in their schooling. I target their curriculum to be more relevant to the real world that they will experience outside of high school, while still keeping in the guidelines of the state standards. "Advanced" students are those who are college bound or are even considering college as a possible option. Their curriculum is more along the lines of college preparatory classes to develop their higher analytical skills. I teach the eight parts of speech and how to use them in writing, as well as introducing paragraph writing to develop more sophisticated writing skills. I have also tutored younger students in learning the alphabet letter names, sounds, and beginning reading skills.

I encourage students and parents to help make sure our tutoring experience enjoyable and beneficial by letting me know any resources or suggestions they may have. I am easy to reach if you have any questions or would like to schedule a lesson. I look forward to learning together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am currently a teacher of freshmen English literature and composition.

Grammar

I integrate grammar into every lesson in my classroom. Students' grades on writing assignments are somewhat dependent on their use of appropriate and correct grammar. We also do exercises to practice proper grammar.

Literature

Within the course of a school year, my curriculum covers multiple genres and types of literature. We cover an assortment of authors, from classics to modern and diverse in culture and gender. I also have students use their readings of this literature to analyze and reach higher level thinking. My students are able to understand more complex texts throughout the year and use them to develop critical thinking skills.

Proofreading

I teach my students in my classes to proofread and edit their writing assignments. I was also an intern for a local non-profit organization that I was a proofreader for all public announcements and public relations that went out. I am able to teach proofreading and editing skills to ensure the most success for young writers.

Reading

Reading and writing are equally weighted within my curriculum. For every writing assignment done, there are several readings to go with them. I teach reading skills to help students recall what they read better as well as to be able to use that new information in a higher order of thinking. Reading skills are gained by adding more complex thinking to each new level of reading.

Spelling

My students take spelling tests for words that are appropriate for their grade level that they may come across in curriculum materials. I also create ways for students to remember spellings for more difficult words. Using spelling words in daily life as well as seeing and hearing them being used helps better students' spelling and vocabulary.

Vocabulary

Students in my classes are required to do vocabulary every week. At the beginning of each week a new set of vocabulary words is given to the students to begin researching and understanding. Students are asked to give their own connotation of the words and the actual denotation. They are also required to use the words several times throughout the year, whether it's through reading them in works of literature or using them in their own writing.

Writing

I am currently a high school English teacher. I teach freshmen literature and composition. In my curriculum, I begin with the basics of writing which include the eight parts of speech, proper grammar and punctuation, and forming different types of sentences correctly. I also teach students how to write in MLA formatting for essays, how to write different types of letters, and to write creatively in multiple genres. I am also able to teach APA formatting. I make sure students have the basics down before going into a more challenging writing assignment.
