About Paul

I'm a trained, experienced, patient professional - I'd love to help you discover your true potential and get through those "rough spots" in your school work!

I've worked as a teacher for almost 20 years and as a tutor for 15 years. I've taught students of all ages and education levels - from Kindergarten through college - in a variety of subjects. Most of my experience in education has been as a college Psychology teacher; I love teaching students about the ways that our brains and minds work. Teaching about Psychology-related subjects has really helped me to understand how to help people better. Helping people to learn and succeed is one of my favorite jobs!

As a tutor, I've been able to help many different people to read, write and learn better. I love helping students to discover how they learn best as individuals and then working with them on a one-on-one basis to empower them to use successful learning techniques that fit in well with the many different requirements of their teachers, schools, and academic subjects. I love coaching students this way and then seeing the joy on their faces when they successfully learn - there's nothing like "seeing those light bulbs come on" and helping students "get it!"

I have over 15 years' experience in successfully teaching thousands of students a wide variety of college-level Psychology courses. I have instructed Psychology courses dealing with everything from Early Childhood Development to Gerontology (the Psychology of Aging). I am also trained as a Counselor - this combined insight and experience helps me to successfully work with students to help them understand and appreciate how Psychology is a living, breathing, fascinating and important part of their daily lives.

Language is a vital part of who we are as people, students and citizens. Language is blended in to almost everything we do in our daily lives - we even use it when we have conversations with ourselves in our own minds! With this in mind, I have gained extensive experience in successful one-on-one individualized writing tutoring. Over the years, I have helped a wide variety of students unlock their personal abilities to comfortably and successfully express themselves in writing in a wide range of academic subjects. I am also officially certified as a Writing Tutor with the International Tutoring Association.

I would love to help you successfully learn and perform better in your school work. I'm confident that you'll benefit from my down-to-Earth, casual, comfortable tutoring style and my proven experience as a teacher and tutor. All of us have the ability to learn. However, everyone's "learning style" is a little bit different. I look forward to partnering with you as your tutor and helping you explore, discover and use your own successful learning methods!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

For several years at Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio, I taught a variety of "Student Success Courses," including "Career and Life Decisions." The course, SSC 110, assisted students in the process of making a career decision and helped to develop a better understanding of self and specific decision-making skills by being an opportunity to assess interests, skills, needs and values through evaluative instruments and exercises. It offered a variety of resources for exploring career fields. This familiarized me well with the field of career development.

College Counseling

I have a Master's degree in Education (Guidance and Counseling) from Eastern Illinois University. That "College Student Personnel" program gave me valuable insights into counseling, educational guidance, higher education administration, educational philosophy and student developmental psychology and theory.

Also, I was an Admissions Specialist at the Owens Community College Office of Admissions. In that job, I actively promoted individual student growth and development by assisting students with the successful completion of their degree requirements using a comprehensive developmental advising approach. I helped to ensure a positive learning experience by assisting students in all areas of academic advising. I maintained broad knowledge of courses and majors necessary for academic guidance as well as knowledge of college transfer articulation agreements. I assisted students and prospective students with selection of coursework: prerequisites and co-requisites, transferable courses, registration for courses and/or schedule changes, and the creation of tentative academic plans. I assessed students’ needs for referral to various resources on campus and maintained open communication with division deans and department chairs regarding program changes. I participated in many aspects of New Student Orientation, as well.

I'm confident that my years of experience in many college roles involving tutoring, instructing and other vital Student Services work would also make me an ideal "College Counseling" resource for WyzAnt.

Sociology

I have a Master's Degree in Education. I have taught Sociology and Social Studies courses at elementary, secondary, and college levels. I am also a Licensed Substitute Teacher (Specialization in Integrated Social Studies - Adolescence to Young Adult- grades 7-12), by the State of Ohio Dept. of Education.

Study Skills

I have an extensive academic background in Education, including a Master's degree in Education (Guidance and Counseling) and broad, hands-on classroom experience teaching college-level Psychology and Study Skills courses. This has given me a solid practical and theoretical insight into the mechanics of effective learning.

At Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio, Itutored students in the OCC Study Center in a wide variety of course and topic areas and helped those students develop and strengthen fundamental academic skills through the use of standardized learning style surveys, study strategies inventories and intensive one-on-one personal tutoring. I also developed and presented a broad variety of developmental Study Center seminars. I also have prepared and presented "Student Success Courses" at the college level, including "Preparing to Succeed in College," "College Study Skills."

I'm confident that my broad professional and personal background gives me what it takes to be an effective Study Skills Tutor for WyzAnt.
