I've had a passion for working with children for as long as I can remember! The greatest reward for me is to watch as a child's confidence levels begin to soar because they realize they can be successful in school, after they had so recently been having such difficulties in particular subjects. Once a child develops this confidence in themselves, they begin to be successful and happier in many other areas of their lives! I get such pleasure out of knowing that I played a part in helping them get to this place, and this is my ultimate goal.
I taught first grade for 2 years, in a public school, and then decided to stay home to raise my own children. When my children went to school full time, I began teaching pre-school part-time, and have been doing so for the past 20+ years. I taught our Pre-K class for about 10 of those years, preparing the children for kindergarten.
I've also been tutoring elementary aged children for the past 25 years, and have seen them grow by leaps and bounds! I've found that adding some "fun," educational activities into the tutoring session really helps heighten the child's interest in learning, and provides them with instant gratification and feelings of success.
For the past few years, I've also been teaching a cooking class to 3-5 year olds, which not only teaches the children to cook, but also offers subtle lessons in math, science, some reading, and communication skills. There are so many ways, and opportunities, to teach a child during a typical day! We just need to capture those moments!
I have a current background check, as required by my preschool, and will gladly show you a copy if requested.
I'd love to help your child in his/her areas of difficulty!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have an expired certification in grades K-8, and have 2 years experience with teaching 1st grade, as well as more than 20 years of experience teaching preschool and Pre-K. Additionally, I have 25 years of experience tutoring children in grades K-3 in reading and phonics, math, spelling, and writing. I try to evaluate what teaching techniques work best for each individual child, so learning can be made easier and more enjoyable!
I've spent the last 25 years tutoring children in many subjects they've been having difficulty in. It seems that reading has been at the top of the list, and I typically emphasize phonics, as that tends to be the easiest for a child to understand and then be able to apply to all areas of his/her reading. Sometimes starting with basic phonics lays the foundation that a particular child may have been lacking in all along. Once this foundation is mastered, the child can expand his/her reading skills in all subjects!
I've been tutoring children in grades K-3, for 25 years, in many subjects. Over the years, I've helped many students learn new ways to study, sometimes adding a fun flair to it, such as card games for learning addition, subtraction, and multiplication. I also try to help them associate some reading materials with things that are familiar in their own lives. I try to get a feel for what would work best, individually, for each child, as everyone learns in different ways.
