About Dana

Over 30 years’ experience in teaching, middle school through university, in multiple fields – mainly technology, French, Spanish, Latin, and coaching, but including photography, sailing and coastal navigation, and athletic injuries and rehabilitation. “Teaching” is not limited to school-settings or to school-subjects alone, of course. My signature traits are enthusiasm, attention to detail, a high level of organization, listening, patience, clear and concise communication, working collaboratively, exact writing, and interest in many disciplines informed by a wide variety of reading and experience. I have coached girls' soccer and girls' lacrosse for many years. I love cooking great food, travel, the Maine coast, gardening, reading, and writing. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I am a certified athletic trainer whose knowledge-base includes all aspects of A&P, and most specifically of musculo-skeletal anatomy. Athletic trainers cope with and manage mostly injuries to the extremities, but also with head, neck, and abdominal injuries, general health, diet/nutrition, fitness, rehabilitation, and injury-prevention.

Cooking

An avid home-chef since my early 20s, I cook for the pleasure of using proper technique (knife, cooking methods), proper ingredients (fresh, high quality), and proper amendments (fats, seasonings) to make excellent, flavorful, generally healthy meals. Cookery and eating are highly personal undertakings; what might be a successful technique may for one may result in failure for another; what might taste perfect to one may taste "off" to another. I can teach the essentials of preparing proteins, vegetables, starches, and perfect salads. I have only a few sure-fire recipes for appetizers and desserts.

French

I have taught French, both in classroom and independent study settings, for my entire 30+ year teaching career. My Master's degree is in French literature - and I read constantly - but my real love is French language and culture. Both are so beautiful and rich, not to mention useful: France remains the #1 tourist destination in the world, and French remains a crucial world language. I speak at a near-native level, and natives with whom I speak take me as a native without quite being able to place my accent. I have led numerous student-trips to France.

General Computer

I am an experienced user of both the PC and Mac platforms, having most recently been Technology Integration Specialist - teaching students and faculty colleagues, and engaging in individual user-support, technology teaching-tools, software and systems support, and the like. I have taught students in a 1:1 laptop and SMARTBoard environment. I am familiar with PC operating systems through Windows 8, and with Mac iOS through 10.8. Skilled in all Microsoft Office 2010 and iWork tools, as well as numerous other software/tools such as Photo Story 3, Windows Live Moviemaker, Audacity, Evernote, Dropbox, MOODLE, Dreamweaver, Premiere Pro...

Grammar

I am a grammarian - a word-watcher - of the first order! A frankly picky reader and editor, I have little tolerance for grammatical errors. I collect such errors, and love to pass along - in a loving, humorous, yet stern way - the importance of speaking and writing in Standard English. "If I would have known...," for example, drives me crazy: the pluperfect tense is required here - "If I had known...." I have many more examples, and can teach/tutor students to know real English. Do you want a job? Write well!

Macintosh

I have been an ardent Mac user for years and have intimate knowledge of the operating system, settings in Preferences, wireless connectivity, the iWork programs (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote), iPhoto, iMovie, and so on. Other Mac-specific areas such as Contacts, Calendar, and Safari are also most familiar. I have a broad and detailed understanding of managing files, maintenance, personalization, and keeping the Mac running well. The past six of my 30+ years' teaching experience has been spent teaching students and colleagues beginning, intermediate, and advanced computer skills.

Microsoft Excel

I am an expert user of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook, having taught these applications for the past several years both to middle school and high school students and to adult teaching-colleagues.

Microsoft Outlook

I use Outlook daily, including the calendar and invite functions. I understand managing folders. I understand how to reply to messages, how to forward messages, and how to manage Inbox, Sent, and Deleted Items folders.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I am an expert user of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, having taught these applications for the past five years both to middle school and high school students and to adult teaching-colleagues.

Microsoft Publisher

I have taught students in the use of Publisher for many years. In addition to exploring the vast array of templates, students have created brochures, calendars, and greeting cards. Trifold brochures in particular require the understanding of the six "surfaces" of the final folded work, and good understanding of text boxes. Students learn to delete those provided in the various templates and to replace them with their own, to alter colors and placement of the various graphics, and to fully customize their product. Text box line-spacing is another issue which - in the case of some of the templates - can be altered only by keyboard shortcut (CTRL+1, CTRL+2, CTRL+5, etc.). Students are also required to print their works - in the case of brochures, they must understand how to flip the page correctly in the Print dialog box.

Microsoft Word

I am an expert user of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, having taught these applications for the past five years both to middle school and high school students and to adult teaching-colleagues.

Vocabulary

It is important to use the right word for what you really mean to say - the French call it "le mot juste." If you REALLY know what a word means, often a matter of knowing its roots, then you can use it properly. For example, "invest" derives from the Latin verb investire, meaning to cover with cloth - thus to cover/wrap/endow/surround your money or time or interest or troops. A good dictionary is indispensable, less for spelling and more for real and accurate meaning; I love the online possibilities, AND still resort to the latest hard-copy dictionaries!

Couldn't ask for more — I am pretty dense when it comes to computers so I knew I needed help. Dana's background as a teacher was great for me in that he was very patient with my questions and very knowledgeable with his answers. He took the time to help me with my understanding of how to update three iphones, our IMAC, and our Ipad as well as make changes to all so that they functioned better. He was also timely and poli ...
