About Christopher

Hi!

So you want to learn about what makes me a great potential tutor. Well, first and foremost, I am a middle grades education major at Miami University, so I am trying to gain experience working with students so that I can improve as a future teacher. I have been in school for a couple of years now (Miami lists me as a senior, although I have a couple years left), and I have been to several elementary and middle schools observing and tutoring. Most of my tutoring experience is with students between 3rd and 6th grade, but the degree that I am working towards is for 4th through 9th grade. Subject wise, I have tutored students in just about every subject at one point and time. Most of my formal tutoring, however, has been in math and social studies.

I was also my younger brother's tutor/parental support while he was in the k12 program (grades 2-6). Although this was not formal tutoring, I probably learned more from that experience than I did in the schools. I took place of the actual teacher for my brother, and worked very close with him as he progressed through his elementary grades. One of the questions asked for this is what I love about tutoring. The answer to this is similar to what I love about teaching. It's a great feeling to make a difference in a student's life. Teachers can provide this during school hours, but there are students who need extra help. For my placements that I receive at Miami, I love coming into a classroom, and working with students so that they can get one-on-one attention, and I can hopefully help them in the time that we have, where the teacher may not have been able to spend that time during class.

Math was my greatest strength as a student in grade school, and that has transitioned smoothly to teaching. Most teachers stick to the traditional methods of answering math problems. Because of the fact that, in grade school, I did math in a non-traditional way, I understand that not all students answer math problems the same way. It's important for me, as a future teacher, to realize and adapt to their methods, so that they have the best chance at succeeding.

Unfortunately, vocabulary in our education system is based on rote memory. Because of this however, I feel that I have the ability to work with students on their vocabulary skills, and I have the experience of successfully working with previous students on these skills.

I've been learning about common core throughout my college career. This is important because all of our students' tests are based on the common core. There isn't much to put here, because it is similar to the elementary education qualifications.

Almost all of my experience is from elementary. I have worked with students one-on-one for over 4 years (and even longer if I include when I tutored my younger brother while he was in 2nd through 6th grade). This is the age group that I want to work with the most when I become a teacher, so it would be great to get experience at these levels (as well as others because any teaching/tutoring experience is great to have!)

If you are interested, I would love to meet you and see if I am good match as a tutor! Let me know and I will try to get back to you as soon as possible.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
