About Linda

My love of teaching comes from a lifelong and fulfilling career working with students from preschool through eighth grade, and from tutoring adults in English. I specialize in teaching second language learners, or those whose first language or language spoken in the home, is not English. My undergraduate degrees are from Baldwin Wallace College and Cleveland State University spanning Kindergarten through grade eight. I have a masters degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages) from the University of Findlay, and have over 30 years experience in teaching in private and public K-8 schools, with a strong focus on English, literacy and reading instruction.

I was awarded the McDonald's "Making the Grade" teaching recognition in 2001, was a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar recipient in 2003, and am listed in the 2004 edition of "Who's Who of American Teachers."

My goal is to actively engage and involve each student in the way he/she learns best. I assign homework after each lesson, and give assessments as needed to help monitor progress and design instruction. I also provide periodic progress reports.

I am available for tutoring in the summer months Monday through Wednesday from 9-4, and during the school year on weekdays from 5pm to 9pm. My hourly base is $65 hour.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

As a former private school teacher, I focused primarily on using phonics to teach reading, using the Continental Press series. Although I typically draw from many methods to teach reading, phonics is one that is fundamental or provides the foundation for learning to read, especially for second language learners. Because the English language contains so many exceptions and irregularities in terms of letters and corresponding sounds, such as the schwa and soft and hard sounds of c and g, learning the basics of phonics is critical for younger and for most ESL students.
