About Heidi

I am an experienced teacher who has been teaching students in elementary school, high school, college, and graduate school for 30 plus years. I have an Ohio license in Reading and Social Studies. In addition to teaching, I have tutored students in grades K - 12 in Reading/Language Arts, math, study skills, and test taking skills.

Through the years, I've developed many strategies that meet the needs of a variety of learners. I tailor my approach to tutoring based on the age and needs of the person I am working with.

I currently teach undergraduate and graduate students in curriculum methods and reading, which keeps me current on the latest literacy approaches.

I love to learn and I love to help others learn more, better, and faster.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been working with elementary students for 30 years. I have a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Cleveland State University and an Ohio Certificate in Reading in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade. Currently, I work with elementary students in reading and math as a school improvement coach. I teach in the teacher training program in the Master Apprenticeship Program at Ursuline College.

Elementary Math

I teach teachers about instructional strategies for students with various ability levels. I have worked with teachers from grades K through 8 in mathematics. I currently teach a methods course at Cleveland State University.

Elementary Science

I approach science instruction from a position of reading comprehension and the "doing" of science. Students need to know how reading science is different from reading a novel. They also learn science better by doing science rather than watching it.

Grammar

Often, people have powerful ideas that get lost in poor grammar. Knowing about concepts such as subject-verb agreements and the difference between "then" and "than," for example, are important to clear writing. My students have always through I was a stickler for grammar.

Phonics

I have been working with elementary students for 30 years. I have a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Cleveland State University and an Ohio Certificate in Reading in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade. Currently, I work with elementary students in reading and math as a school improvement coach. Among other courses, I teach phonics in the teacher training program in the Master Apprenticeship Program at Ursuline College.

Reading

I have over 30 years of experience in teaching initial reading and reading comprehension to people of all ages. I have taught the reading sequence of courses from initial reading instruction to reading across the content areas in both undergraduate and graduate level programs.

Social Studies

I have been certified in Social Studies in Ohio for over 30 years. My undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies.

Spelling

Spelling is a critical component of reading and writing. As a teacher certified in K - 12 reading, I have been working with students of all ages on spelling strategies.

Study Skills

I have been working as an educator for 30 years. I have a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Cleveland State University, an Ohio Certificate in Reading in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade and a secondary certificate in Social Studies. I developed a study skills program for Hales Franciscan High School in Chicago, IL. I have conducted numerous workshops on study skills in the Midwest. I teach in the teacher training program in the Master Apprenticeship Program at Ursuline College.

Vocabulary

Learning vocabulary is not about writing the word and the definition five times each...it's about using the words in the proper context. Building a strong vocabulary is important in the four major content areas. Knowing the vernacular of science or social studies, for example, aids in the comprehension of those subject areas.

Writing

I developed a writing program for elementary and high school students. It is based on a progression of skills that become more detailed as students become more proficient in their writing ability. I modify this program based on each student's abilities.
