Hi! My name is Mary. I have a MSEd. I have substitute taught in public schools as well as facilitated some seminars in college. I have excellent grammar and syntax skills. As you can see from one of the photos, I am an animal lover! I believe my passion for and love of animals has transferred into my love of helping students. Some of my best qualities are compassion, patience, understanding, and empathy.
Until January of 2012 I worked as an in-patient counselor at a crisis step-down mental health unit. Health issues necessitated leaving work outside the home, for now. Tutoring seems like a good fit for me at this time.
When I was counseling I was able to quickly build rapport with clients, gaining their trust and willingness to be open. I did an internship at a large high school where I had good success developing effective counseling relationships with students. In addition to counseling I wrote letters of recommendation for students to send with their college applications.
From my education as a counselor I learned that the best way to help a client is to lead him or her to gaining insight on their own, thus empowering them. I take the same approach to tutoring. I find that if the student finds the "a-ha" moment on his or her own the lesson is likely to be learned. When teaching I was able to find ways to relate a problematic subject to familiar circumstances to help reach that "a-ha" moment.
I look forward to the shift in my career and working with students to help them achieve success! Hi! My name is Mary. I have a MSEd. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
