About Franklin

I am originally from the Akron area, but I recently moved back after a 6-year hiatus. I went to college north of Boston and then moved to Lithuania after graduating in 2014. I work as a recruiter for a study abroad program at a university there, and that provided me plenty of opportunities to travel around Europe with a quick stint in Israel/Palestine. I studied Linguistics, so I am quite keen on anything language and culture related; I am a classically trained pianist; I highly value physical activity; I have a deep interest in the natural sciences.

Most of my tutoring falls into the English (ESL) and foreign language categories, although I have tutored in study skills and note-taking as well. In college, I worked for the Foreign Language department as a German tutor and TA, I volunteered teaching English to new immigrants to the Boston area, and I privately tutored a Lithuanian in English. After graduating, I worked with a Lithuanian family at various levels of English, especially with the high school-aged daughter to prepare her for her upcoming English exams.

I hold a minor in German after taking courses on Grimms' fairy tales, grammar, writing, German literature, etc. While living abroad, I often used German to communicate across language barriers.

I am not officially certified in ESL/TOEFL, but I have experience teaching English at all levels and to all age groups.

I am currently saving money for grad school (MSc. Linguistics, University of Edinburgh, Scotland) by doing various jobs. My schedule is very flexible, so I can work with your availability. Feel free to contact me either by phone or email.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I studied Linguistics in college. Throughout the major, I had to rely on my understanding of phonetics, phonology, and the phonics of several languages. I also worked with an endangered language in the Solomon Islands that I was not familiar with, and I had to quickly become acquainted their phonetic/phonemic inventory.

Piano

I have played the piano for 17 years, having begun at age 7. After 6 years of lessons, I began teaching myself more advanced pieces and technique. In college, I took 1 semester of group lessons and 3 semesters of private lessons under Alina Polyakov. Because I was not majoring in music, I only performed in one jury.

Study Skills

For a summer, I worked with three students (10th grade, 9th grade, and 7th grade) to develop their study skills. We worked through different techniques based on their learning styles. While they had been solely relying on flash cards, we learned that they should be incorporating physical movements and verbal processing into their studying. It's extremely exciting for me to see students learn how to learn.
