Bio

I have a natural skill for breaking down problems and communicating them to others, especially in the areas of mathematics and physics. For me, the best thing about tutoring is watching that light-bulb turn on when I know that I hit the right spot for understanding. That 'Oh!' moment is personally one of my favorites, and I love to provide those moments for others. It gives me an incredible sense of satisfaction knowing that I helped a student gain the tools necessary to tackle their next...

It gives me an incredible sense of satisfaction knowing that I helped a student gain the tools necessary to tackle their next assignment or exam.

I began tutoring in 2011 for the Purdue Electrical and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Office and was matched to tutor students in circuit analysis. Since then I've tutored students of other engineering fields for calculus and computer programming. I've also tutored nursing majors at other institutes for their required math coursework. Some of the parents I've helped asked me to tutor their children for math courses in grade school. With a high degree of success for all of these students, I can help a broad range of ages achieve their scholastic goals.

The subjects that I tutor include elementary math, pre-algebra, pre-calculus, geometry, trigonometry, algebra 1 and 2, calculus 1 and 2, physics, computer programming, and electrical engineering. In these subjects, memorization techniques can only get a person so far. A fundamental understanding is the crown jewel, and that is what I strive to nurture in students. If a student has a question, I make sure that I understand their question to formulate an effective response. That is one of the most crucial elements I have enjoyed from a lot of the best teachers I've had. I always end my answers with the question "Does that answer your question?" to ensure that I've understood the question enough to provide a sufficient answer and avoid frustration.

I still have all of my math and engineering textbooks from college which includes algebra 1 all the way through calculus 3 and higher math courses. I use a portable white board and markers and these have been very effective tools for me while tutoring.

I believe in fairness and I will never charge for a lesson that is unsatisfactory. I have a very lenient cancellation window and you will not be charged anything for canceling a lesson if I am notified outside of 3 hours prior to the lesson. A cancellation fee of 50% will be charged for cancellations within 3 hours or for no-shows.

If you are interested, please send me a message and I look forward to working with you!

C

C/C++ was the second programming language that I taught myself. In high school, I took C/C++ as an elective and scored an A+ since I had prior knowledge of the material. During my required computer programming coursework as an engineer at Purdue, I tutored my friends in these programming languages with extremely high results.
C#,

C#

My passion for programming lead me to learn several languages on my own, including C#. L-3 Communications hired me as an intern to write an interfacing program in C# for their source control database. During my required computer programming coursework as an engineer at Purdue, I tutored my friends in other programming languages with extremely high results.

Computer Programming

I began my journey in computer programming as a hobby during my middle years of grade school. I first became familiar with Visual Basic and furthered my understanding of programming through C/C++ all the way down to the low-level language known as assembly. L-3 Communications hired me as an intern where I performed a programming task in C# to interface their employees with the source control database in use at L-3 for efficiency purposes. During my required computer programming coursework as an engineer at Purdue, I tutored my friends in the class with extremely high results.

Great tutor

My daughter felt comfortable with Matthew and learned a lot. She thinks it will help a lot to work with him. A quote from her: "See Mom, I told you it was possible to be good at math and not be socially awkward!" UPDATE 11/19/14: Matthew is now tutoring both of my children. One in geometry and the other in algebra 2. I appreciate his willingness to move tutoring times around based on the kids' exams. Both feel very comfortable with him and are learning a lot and doing better in their classes. UPDATE 02/19/15: Matthew moved out of the area but is still tutoring my children online. I appreciate how Matthew is able to teach the kids how to think about their work. He helps them learn the concepts so they can figure out any problem, not just get that day's homework done.
