About Joni

As an academic personal trainer, I can help you be successful in your academic career!

While working as a research scientist, I was inspired to become a science teacher because the relationships I developed with the high school students I either tutored or mentored. Many of the students I worked with were frustrated by the minimal one-on-one interactions they had with their teachers, and a desire for more time to practice what they have learned in class. Many students simply needed a better understanding of foundational concepts which could be easily done by using a different approach.

I completed my master's in education at the University of Dayton (2012), and taught high school Chemistry and Physical Science. I have a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Cincinnati and worked as a Research Assistant during my senior year. I also have an Associate of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering Technology from the University of Cincinnati and worked as Laboratory Assistant in the Organic Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Technology programs.

I have been a tutor for most of my adult life; I tutored privately and also worked as a tutor while in college. I've tutored a diverse range of learners, elementary through high school, college (young adult), and adults returning to college.

I think of myself as a guide or coach, helping students acquire relevant life skills, such as, learning how to learn, developing a desire to learn, and how to develop diverse ways to think and solve problems. Learning takes time, and spending time with a tutor is an investment that leads to academic success!

I can share relevant examples of how to solve problems and think critically, which have led to my personal and professional academic success

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Children with ADD/ADHD have a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that is more frequently displayed and severe than what is typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development.
As a general education teacher, I have taught students with ADD/ADHD in my chemistry and physical sciences course with success. I implemented environmental and curriculum modifications and strategies that created an accepting environment for my students. I taught students specific strategies to increase organizational skills and goal setting. In addition, skills to improve listening and attending skills and help in following instructions, mnemonic strategies to aid memory, self-instruction, and self-regulation, monitoring and reinforcement are some of the few strategies I utilized when teaching students with this disorder.
