I am a retired math teacher with over 20 years' experience teaching math at
the junior and senior high school levels. I am an experienced math tutor, who has done private math tutoring for over 15 years. I have tutored 7th and 8th grade math, pre-algebra, algebra I and II, geometry and pre-calculus. I have done both private tutoring, and I have worked in two different learning centers tutoring math. I have also done some SAT and ACT preparation in math.
I taught for six years a number of math courses out of the Community Educations Department at Lakeland Community College for women who were afraid of math and need help to understand the math concepts that they did not understand.
With all the levels of math that I have taught, I have always enjoyed seeing the students that I work with gain an appreciation of math.
I get no greater pleasure that seeing a student that I am working with improve their understanding of a math concept. I am patient with the students that I work with, and I have a great deal of understanding when they can not get a concept and always try to explain the concept in a different manner if the first explanation was not to their liking.
I have a bachelor's of science degree in mathematics and a master of arts degree in education.
I am looking forward to be able help your student. My goal in tutoring is to help any student that I am working with to understand their math program and to become a better student in general I am a retired math teacher with over 20 years' experience teaching math at

$35 an hour for one student If doing more that one student in an hour, then the rate will be $45 an hour for two students for that tutoring hour.
I like how Joan prepares for each session and provides information that is very helpful and based on the previous discussion. She doesn't just show up and tutor. She does prework to help with each session. You can tell she cares about the students and really wants to see them succeed.
Mrs. Joan (that's what we call her) is tutoring my son in math. I like how she takes the time to really explain the steps to the math problems. She also gives him little tips or tricks to help him remember the problems he's learned.
Thank you Mrs. Joan.
Joan L. helped my son to brush up on some skills that he struggles with as a fourth grader. My son and I were very pleased with Joan's patience and eagerness to help him learn.
My son felt comfortable with her and understood the concepts. He appreciated the in depth teaching of th concepts he was struggling with .would like to continue the tutoring weekly.
Joan listened to my son's problems with his Algebra. She went over these issues until he understood them. She gave him a plan on how to solve future problems. We will continue with her to help my son.
I was really nervous about meeting with a tutor because of my age and the length of time I had been out of school. Joan is wonderful, very kind and most definitely earned a 5 star rating. Joan never once made me feel out of place or uncomfortable. We spent 1.5 hrs together and the time flew by. I was able to grasp the concepts with the way she was able to explain things to me. Joan makes me feel more confident in myself and my abilities to learn math which is something I can say has not happened before. Thank you Joan, your support and patience is very much appreciated.
After an hour of Joan's help, my son feels more confident that he will start to understand the math concepts that he has been struggling with! He said he felt comfortable with her and that she is patient and "really nice"! I am so happy I found her to help my son with math!
Joan was excellent with my son! She was thorough, patient and adjusted quickly to his knowledge or lack of knowledge in certain skill areas. Great session!
Like any other math course, showing your work is critical to understanding how you get your results. Calculators are shortcuts. She reminded me of this.
Joan has been helping my learning-disabled son for over a year with both Geometry and Algebra 2. Where the curriculum lacked, Joan filled in with extra examples and great creativity. She has wonderful intuition with what to do when against a wall and he thrived under her tutoring. Most importantly, she is very soft and kind with him, very patient. He's had tutors before who got frustrated and blamed him; she never did that. I highly recommend her. Anyone with math skills can tutor; but it takes someone very gifted to "teach," and especially to mold that teaching to each child's needs. The dreaded Common Core will not defeat anyone with Joan on their side!
I am very impressed with Joan. Joan is not only professional , but also compassionate and patient. My daughter had been criticized for her lack of math skills, to the point of feeling anxious about math and math teachers. Joan evaluated my daughter's learning needs and was able to help my daughter feel less anxious, and more self confident after only one lesson. Joan is a positive person, and uses positive reinforcement to help students overcome their learning
obstacles. I am so pleased and thankful to have Joan as my daughter's tutor!
Joan has gone out of her way to provide written steps and helpful hints for my daughter. She has practiced with my daughter and asks for her feedback. She is awesome!
Joan has taught me many algebra 2 concepts. I am a freshman who jumped into algebra 2 at the end of the first quarter. Joan has got me caught up on all three chapters, and she has helped me work my way into the class. Joan is very thorough when she teaches and she makes sure you grasp the concept. Joan is also very patient, and she helped me through the chapter 2 with ease. She is very nice and willing to learn herself. If she thinks anything is slightly wrong she will go back and review the subject, and then work with the student to get the problem solved. Overall, Joan is an amazing tutor, and she is an awesome algebra 2/ precalculus tutor.
Joan bends over backwards to help my student. She brings in additional study materials to help reinforce and explain the difficult concepts of Algebra 2. I'm impressed!
Very detailed and organized, has helped to increase scores on some tests and quizzes, as well as getting homework completed.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught English for one year at a Junior High School. I taught GED classes for eight years where I had to teach students how to write essays. I have tutored ACT English for a number of years in learning centers and privately.
I am a retired math teacher who enjoys helping students improve their math skills. I had been being doing ACT preparation in Math and other subjects for the past 10 years. I have worked in two different learning facilities as well as private an ACT tutor in math and other subjects. I have many extra resource materials on Geometry and the formulas used on the ACT test. These materials will be of great benefit for any ACT math student.
I have taught Algebra 1 for over 10 years and tutored Algebra! for over 20 years. It is important that any math student obtain a good understanding of how to work with integers. I teach integers as money you have and you do not have in your pocket. Young people can understand the concept of money and therefore they can contact the money concept with how to add and subtract integers. I also think that it is important that any math student has a good understanding of how to complete operations with numbers and can do mental math. They need to have an understanding of operations with numbers to know if the answer that they obtain while using a calculator are correct.
I have taught Algebra II for 7 years at a local private high school. I also have tutored Algebra II privately for six years. I have tutored many Algebra II students for credit to help them obtain their high school credit that they needed to graduate instead of going to summer school. In recent four years since my retirement, I have done homework support in Algebra!! working a learning facility. Algebra II is course that further develops the concepts learned in Algebra I. All students planning on going to college need a basic understanding of Algebra to succeed in any college math course. I always told my Algebra II students that Algebra II teaches them to be able to think and problem solve. I really enjoy helping Algebra II students to improve their math skills and achieve in a math course where they were struggling before.
I have taught sixth, seventh and eight grade math when I first started to teach for four years. I have tutored elementary students in learning centers that I have worked at in the past ten years. I am presently tutoring three elementary math students. I believe in helping students improve their math skill though providing them with multiple worksheets for extra practice on the skill that they are struggling with in school.
I taught in a GED program for eight years in Lake County. The majority of the issues that any new GED student had was math. I was able to address the math issues, because I have a degree in mathematics. I had taught both junior and senior high school math students before joining that GED program.
This past year a privately tutored a GED student in math to help her get ready to pass the math part of the test.
I understood the areas of weakness that GED students had which related to their math skills. I was able to set up an individualized program to help each of my GED students improve their math issues.
Finally, I could address the other issues that relate to passing the GED test because of my history certification and I had taught English in an area school for a year.
I have taught Geometry both in an adult education program for one year and six years at a local private high school and half a year at a public area high school. For the past few years since I retired, I have privately tutored Geometry for two years. I have a great love for the concepts taught in Geometry. Geometry teaches a student to problem solve and to develop good reasoning skills. The ACT test has about one-fourth of their questions about Geometric concepts so to have a good understand the concepts taught in Geometry is important. Many of the concepts taught in Geometry are seen again when a student may take Pre-Calculus or Trigonometry. It is important that a students understand how to use the Trig functions taught in Geometry and the use of the special right triangles.
I have taught and tutored students in Pre-algebra. I have many resource materials that I can use to help a student. I enjoy tutoring students in math. I have a great love of math and like to show students that math can be easier that they presently think.
It is important to have a good understanding to the skills in Pre-algebra. A student must have a good understanding of these math skills to succeed in any other future math skill.
I have done a lot of SAT math preparations since I retired from teaching. I really enjoy helping students achieve a better math score on the test. Geometry in one area on the test where students need a lot of help. Geometry was my favorite subject to teach and I know all the strategies to help students achieve in the area of Geometry and other parts of the SAT test.
I tutored many of the skills found in trigonometry when I have done tutoring in precalculus. I have a very good trigonometry book which can be used as resource for information. Trigonometry is one of my favorite subjects. I think that it is important to to obtain a good understanding of the basic skills found in trigonometry.
